“Yeah. I need to unpack and do some laundry.” Neither of those are chores that couldn’t wait, which confirms his desperation to leave.

“Oh… okay.”

Drew looks over at me. “See you again sometime.”

I nod my head and he glances at Hunter, raising his eyebrows just slightly before he leaves.

The moment the door closes, I get down from my chair, but Hunter grabs my arm, holding on to me. “Where are you going?”

“Anywhere but here.”

He stands too, looking down at me. “What’s wrong?”

Can he really be that insensitive? “What do you think? Does what we’ve done mean nothing to you? Do I mean nothing…?” My voice cracks and I stop talking.

Hunter sighs, shaking his head. “I’m sorry. I handled that really badly, didn’t I?”

“Yes.”

He pushes his fingers back through his hair. “I’m just… I’m just not used to being in a relationship, I guess.”

“Seriously? That doesn’t even make sense. We both know you had a reputation with women, and even if you’re not that kind of man anymore – which I hope you’re not – you can’t expect me to believe you’ve never been in a relationship before.”

“I didn’t say never. All I said was I’m not used to it. I lived with someone for…”

His voice fades, his words echo through my head, mingling with memories of Friday evening… of the things he said then… the lies he told. I pull away from him and as he reaches out again, I push him back.

“Don’t come near me.”

He stares, shocked, but I don’t hang around… I run.

I’m up the stairs in no time at all, turning left at the top and heading straight for my bedroom… not his. Although I haven’t slept in here at all, I haven’t moved any of my things into Hunter’s room, other than my toothbrush. Instead, I’ve been coming over here to grab whatever I’ve needed, and my bag is still on the couch. I bring it back to the bed, picking up my laundry at the same time and dumping it inside. I drop my pink blouse and am just bending to pick it up from the floor when the door bursts open.

“There you are,” Hunter says, a little breathless.

“Where else would I be?”

He glances at my bag, his eyes darkening. “Um… what are you doing?”

“What does it look like I’m doing? And do you mind? This is my room.”

“I know, but it’s my house.” He steps forward. “Are you leaving me?”

“It looks that way.”

I grab the blouse and head for the bed, although he cuts me off, glaring down into my eyes.

“I can’t let you leave me when I don’t understand why. If this is because of the way I behaved downstairs and the fact that I introduced you to my brother as my PA, then I’ve already said sorry… and I’ll say it again, and again, for as long as you need me to.”

“It’s got nothing to do with that.”

“Then I don’t get it.”

“I won’t be lied to.”

He frowns. “What am I supposed to have lied about?”

“You told me on Friday evening, before we… before we… came up here…” I can’t say the words.
