“Yes. Six weeks later.”

“Six weeks?”

“Yeah.”

“And I’m supposed to believe you didn’t love her?”

“I had my reasons for asking her to move in, and love had nothing to do with it. Besides, we didn’t see very much of each other. She worked most evenings, and I was at the office all day.”

“And you didn’t mind that?”

“Not in the slightest. We got along okay when we were together, but we weren’t together very much. Then, about a month later, my dad sent me away to Europe.”

“So she moved out again?”

“No, she stayed. She’d given up her apartment, and had nowhere else to go. I wasn’t sure how long I was gonna be away, but in the end I was gone for four months.”

“Did you call her while you were gone?”

“Yes, but not all the time. It wasn’t like that between us. I was looking forward to coming back and seeing her again, but that was because…” He stops talking and lowers his head.

“Because of what? Hunter?”

He looks up again. “Because I’d missed the sex.”

“She… she was that good?”

“Not especially,” he says, shaking his head. “But I’d been faithful to her while I was away… because I’m a faithful kind of guy, and I’d missed having sex.” I sigh and he lets go of one of my hands, reaching out and cupping my cheek. “I’m sorry. This can’t be easy to hear.”

“It’s not.”

He stares at me for a moment or two and then lets his hand fall into my lap again. “I got home in the middle of the afternoon, and I knew Sadie didn’t start her shift at the bar until around six, so I headed to my apartment and let myself in. She wasn’t in the living room, or the kitchen, so I dumped my bag, assuming she’d be in the bedroom. The door was open, and that was when I saw her… with Austin.”

I gasp, unable to help myself. “I thought you said he was dating someone else.”

“Yeah. It seems Austin wasn’t a faithful kind of guy.”

“What did you do?”

“To start with, nothing. I was in shock, I think. I mean, I’m not that easily shocked, but…”

“Hunter… what are you saying? You keep telling me you weren’t in love with her, but then you say things like that.”

“I wasn’t in love with her. I swear it. The reason I was in shock was because of what they were doing.”

“Why? What on earth were they doing?”

He sighs and turns away for a moment. “I don’t know how to put this.”

“Why not?”

He looks back, tilting his head at me. “Because, my love… you’re such an innocent.”

“Not anymore.”

A smile twitches at his lips. “Yeah, you are… believe me.” He sucks in a breath. “When I said Sadie was with Austin… they weren’t in bed together.”

“Where were they then?”
