This behavior was curious. The unsanctioned wolves were so confident that they hadn’t even bothered to hide the Omegas. It sent a shiver of discontent down my spine.

“At least there’s food,” Valor said, the picture of calm as he leaned back in his chair. “I’m starving.”

Ezra glanced at him, unimpressed. “You ate before we came.”

“Yeah, that was four hours ago. I’m a growing male.” Valor pointed to each of us. “Requests from the bar?”

We gave him our orders and tried to appear as nonthreatening as possible. We’d reviewed our roles before we entered the bar. Ezra had a photo of the female we were looking for, and we kept our eyes peeled for the males who had accompanied her on the day of the ambush. With any luck, the power dynamics of their organization hadn’t changed much.

On the outside, Brielle was calm, but the bond hummed with her scattered emotions. Anxiety, fear, longing, and sorrow all warred within her. I slipped my hand over hers, pushing feelings of reassurance down the bond.

She smiled as Valor arrived with a loaded tray of food and drinks. The noise levels in the bar returned to normal, and we faked a conversation.

“How much longer until we reach Snow Ridge?” Valor asked.

“Three hours,” I supplied.

I popped the cap off a local brew and handed it to Brielle before grabbing one for myself.

“Are you really going to teach me to track in snow?” Brielle asked Valor.

Sly as a fox that one is, my wolf said proudly.

That she is, I agreed.

She effortlessly slipped into any role we needed. I noticed several locals listening to our chatter as I sipped my drink.

“Sweetling, when I’m through with you, your wolf will put the Enforcers to shame.”

“That’s something I can’t wait to witness,” Ezra said.

“And document.” I wiggled my eyebrows, pushing the narrative of carefree travelers.

Fewer eyes were on us now, but I wasn’t a fool. Others still tracked our small group.

Halfway through our meal, Ezra tapped his fingers on the table, drawing our attention. His eyes shifted to the left, and we followed his gaze toward a woman at the end of the bar.

Her face was half-covered in shadows, but her blonde hair was noticeable even in the low light. She turned to the bartender, and the bond pulsed as we got a good look at the woman we’d been searching for.

“She’s an Alpha,” Valor whispered.

“She’s also taken a special interest in Brielle,” Ezra said between sips of beer. “I’ve caught her looking four times.”

“Family resemblance?” I asked.

“My sister and I do look alike,” Brielle replied.

“Then we have our answer,” Ezra said.

He was right. If the woman noticed Brielle, it was likely because she’d spent a fair amount of time with Brielle’s sister.

This was it. The need for action rose like a tidal wave between us.

“I’m going to talk to her,” Brielle said.

“No,” Valor said as Ezra hissed. “Absolutely not.”

“Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Brielle is right,” I said, even though all my instincts demanded I tuck her somewhere safe. “She won’t talk to us. Her guard goes up when she looks this way. If we want answers, we have to let Brielle approach her.”
