Abel dropped his phone and stared. “What?”

I squirmed under his gaze, but Ella wasn’t paying attention as she continued. “Yeah, and just the other day, Chan was almost killed by a falling gargoyle statue when she was walking here for lunch. It barely missed her.”

“What in the world?” Kailey’s eyes were huge as she gaped, but she didn’t garner my attention for long as Abel fumed.

“Were you hurt?”

“My knee got scraped up, and I’m sorry, but a pair of jeans and a sweater you bought me were ruined.”

“Fuck the goddamn clothes, Chan. Were you going to tell me about this?”

“Yes, of course.” I swallowed, biting my lip. I wasn’t, actually, because I didn’t want to worry him. They were freak accidents, and Abel took things to a whole new level.

“Right? Like how you told me about the gargoyle falling from the sky.” He scoffed and grabbed his phone.

Ella and Kailey got quiet as they watched how upset Abel was.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m contacting campus police, and we’ll report all this. Then I’m not letting you out of my sight. You’re having a guard on you twenty-four seven. I don’t give a shit if you like it or not.”

Abel got like this when he was scared. He’d never admit it, but I’d caught on. I swiveled in my seat while Kailey looked at the both of us like we were being romantic. I swore stars were shooting from her eyes. Ella was a whole different story. It looked as if she bit back hard from saying something.

“Come on, calm down. These were freak accidents. I’m sure the driver was some kid out horsing around. It wasn’t even a high-end car, so they were out of place here. There’s nothing to stress over. I’m okay. There’s no need to have a guard all over me. I’m barely alone. You made sure of that. If you’re not around, then you have some frat guy nearby, don’t deny it. Or I’m with Kailey or Ella or both.” I rubbed my hand over his chest, and he clasped my fingers in his and held our hands over his heart as his gaze fell into mine.

“You’re too precious, baby. These are too many freak accidents, especially after you almost drowned yesterday.”

“You almost drowned?” Kailey and Ella squeaked, and I sank further into my seat as I sagged my shoulders. I didn’t particularly want anybody to know about that either.

“It was my fault. I walked too close to the pool, slipped, and fell in.”

“Yeah, and my princess here can’t swim. I almost had a heart attack when she didn’t resurface.”

Forgetting everything else, I wrapped my arms around his neck, leaned over, and kissed his cheek. “But remember, you saved me. My hero.”

Without moving his head, Abel directed his eyes toward me and rolled them. “It was fucked up, is what that was.”

“Awe. You saved her. How romantic,” Kailey gushed and bounced in her seat.

The food finally arrived, and I sighed in relief, thinking the conversation would be over.

“I don’t like that we’re not reporting this. I want everything you know about the car.”

Before I got a word out, Ella filled him in. He paid close attention to her.

The atmosphere became stilted for the rest of breakfast, and I wondered for the thousandth time why things had to be so difficult.

Once our meals were finished, we went our separate ways. Abel wrapped his arm over my shoulder, and we walked to my dorm. Abel’s anger still simmered beneath the surface, but he’d stopped hounding me further about the incidents. After talking with Ella, he calmed a little because he had all the facts. Though nerves rattled me thinking about what he’d use it for.

“After dinner with my father, we’ll be attending a meeting.”

The way he announced it made me a little worried because last night, he told me not to worry about it, so obviously, he had a lot on his mind over what happened and wanted to distract me from asking too many questions.

“What sort of meeting?”

Abel acted nonchalant as usual. “It’s an important meeting, you’re my date, but you can’t tell anybody about it. It has to stay between us.”

What was so important about a meeting? I figured I’d learn about it soon enough. I nodded and said, “So you trust me now?”
