Huffing, I slumped in my chair and gazed out the window. There’d never be a part of my life Abel didn’t worm his way into.

“Is everything okay, Chan?”

“Yeah, um, no. There’s so much going on, and knowing my boyfriend is bothering you, it upsets me.”

“Don’t worry about Abel, I can handle him.”

“Are you sure? Because I’m comfortable with you and don’t want to find another lawyer.”

David laughed and leaned forward with his arms on the table. “I’m positive. I’m used to significant others trying to cause waves to get answers. However, I want to be clear. I work for you, and only you. You always make the call.”

Something inside me settled at the confirmation. I didn’t want other hands in the pot. I wanted, no, I needed control in these matters. I’d already given so much to Abel, and it didn’t bother me, but this was my father’s legacy, and I wouldn’t let any of it be destroyed by anyone. I could take care of it myself.

“Thank you. I want to proceed and set up a meeting with Blake and his attorney, if he has one, and find out what he’d be willing to do if I offered a settlement. If negotiations were possible.” I hoped if I played along with him and made a generous offer, he’d leave me alone and move on with his life. After all, I’d inherit billions. Giving him a hundred million or whatever meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. I wanted my father’s company, so I could keep his vision alive. I needed to keep the connection because I didn’t have anything else.

“I can get the meeting set up easily. We might want to make some follow-up plans. My finance lawyer and I did some digging and found Blake has a loan with his stock as collateral. The finance company holding the loan might be persuaded to sell. After all, the loan has already been missing payments and has been sold numerous times. You should acquire the loan, and you’d be able to foreclose, gaining you those shares. Well, if he doesn’t pay.”

The moment it took to absorb his information didn’t last long. It was a smart move. Without hesitation, I said, “Do it. Send me the paperwork when it’s ready.”

For the next half hour, David and I strategized, and he guided me on what he perceived as the best plan of action and told me he’d email everything over once he ironed it all out. We’d reconvene, and he’d answer my questions.

While leaving his office, weight fell off my shoulders. Dave exuded confidence, and I trusted him to take care of everything. With the fortune I paid him, I didn’t doubt he was one of the best.

When I got to the hotel, Abel started in. “What were you doing downtown? Why didn’t you wait? I would’ve gone with you.”

It was as if all of the pressure I’d been under unleashed at once, and I exploded. “Abel, I can’t believe you. You called and tried to bully my lawyer. MY lawyer. What the hell is wrong with you?” Everything had come to a head, and I exploded on Abel, and it felt good.

“Don’t start, Chan. You’re the one keeping secrets. I had to make sure the lawyer was legit and would take care of you.”

“My father set me up with him. Do you really think he’d give me a bad lawyer? You need to stop interfering in everything. This is mine, and I need to be in control, not you,” I snapped back.

Abel worked his jaw, crossed his arms, and narrowed his gaze, not budging at all. I threw my hands in the air and stormed into the bedroom before I slammed the door. Abel yelled, “We’re going out tonight, Chan, get ready. You have two hours.” I slammed the connecting bathroom door with satisfaction without bothering with a response.

Abel ordered a driver for the evening, and I sat as far from him as possible on the bench seat. Abel rolled his eyes at my attitude. All I wanted was an apology, and of course, he wouldn’t give it, but this time I wasn’t caving.

The fact we were going out had me confused. I thought he wanted to keep everything a low profile, but as soon as we arrived at the hotel where the pre-premiere party was already in progress, several society members greeted us, and it all became clear. Abel didn’t want to come out tonight either, but when the members invited you, you showed up. Especially when you were a pledge like Abel.

Shaking hands and getting situated, I looked around the dance club and noticed all the women eyeing Abel. They fucked him with their eyes, and I became even further annoyed. It always happened, and I always ignored it because Abel never reciprocated. He was all mine and ensured everybody knew it, but this evening, it hit a raw nerve.

A couple of guys winked at me, and I blushed, making them grin. Abel growled beside me, but I ignored him. A little adventure hummed in my bones, and I decided to play a dangerous game. Usually, I detested the immaturity of it, but I wanted to ruffle Abel’s feathers as bad as he had done mine.

When the server came around, I spoke low and in her ear, ordering popular heavy alcohol-induced drinks, but asked if she’d make them virgin. She glanced at Abel and winked, “You got it.”

“Thanks.”

Ignoring Abel, I started speaking to Ann Marie, a girl a couple of years older than me who came on the arm of one of the society members who, according to Abel, had recently graduated.

So far, I liked her. She had no clue about the society or the money thrown around with them. Just a nice girl, and it made me wonder what the guy wanted with her. Society members always picked people of either status or money, preferably both, from what I had noticed so far.

The drinks came, and I took a sip of mine, and it tasted sweet, fruity, and alcohol-free, but Abel didn’t know it, and he frowned. I continued ignoring him.

Once the drink was gone, I acted a little tipsy because Abel knew I didn’t hold my alcohol. I asked Ann Marie to dance, and she brightened as we grabbed each other’s hand and headed toward the dance floor, away from the VIP section. Abel tried to get my attention, but I continued on my way.

Wanting to fuck with Abel more, I guided Ann Marie into the middle of the dance floor where we were bound to be seen and started moving my body suggestively. Ann Marie blushed. She stayed and danced but nothing like what I did. The moves were exactly how I moved against Abel when he thrust inside me, and I made them look more poetic with the music.

A man moved in between Ann Marie and me and ground himself behind me, and instantly I became uncomfortable. I stepped forward, trying to move around to get back with Ann Marie, but I caught Abel’s gaze, and we stared at each other. I continued to dance like before this grinder man showed up.
