Left with one more, my heart is still in my throat as Luke faces off with the other man.

I know how much pain Luke has to be in, but I can’t sneak up on this one like I did with Marco.

My gut twists, nauseating fear clawing through me as I watch Luke circle with his opponent and dodge several more swings.

Luck isn’t invincible, however, and the Cobra lands a kick to Luke’s bullet graze.

It drops him to one knee, and just as the guy goes to kick down on his head, some bullshit MMA move or something, Luke raises his arms to block it.

Standing up, Luke launches the guy backward. It stuns the Cobra long enough for Luke to snag another piece of wood and smash it down into the guy’s head.

The second one is now unconscious, too.

Coming out from hiding, I go right up to Luke, wrapping my arms around his waist and squeezing.

“Oh, thank God you’re ex-military.”

Luke chuckles lightly, and the rumbling of his chest against me feels so damn good.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, doc. But thanks.” He grabs my shoulders, backing me up. “Also, ow.”

Memory strikes, and I realize I was just clamping down on his battered ribs.

“Oh, fuck. I’m sorry. I just?—”

His hand comes to my chin, tipping my face up to look at him. “Hey. You’re fine. We, uh, need to go, though.”

Nodding, I step back, and Luke takes my hand.

We run through the debris in this part of the building, and he guides us toward that fenced-off area.

“We’ll be less visible here.”

“Got it.” I try to breathe around the horrible worry gripping me.

I’m terrified something else is going to happen, and I can’t exactly help much if we’re attacked again.

Luke hauls me behind another tall stack of random debris, and we hunker down behind it.

“Do you have your phone?”

I shake my head. “I wasn’t able to grab it from the hotel room. You?”

“No.” He mimics my head shake. “They busted in while I was sleeping. I only got through a few of them when this Marco asshole appeared. They used some type of gas.”

My stomach flip-flops at the memory. “Yeah, I think it was chloroform or something similar. It had that chemical sweet smell.”

Luke frowns, his jaw working as he looks around us.

“I’d really like to know how they’re getting all this shit. Stealing this level of supplies…It isn’t easy. I’d bet anything they’ve got an inside man.”

“That’s a terrifying thought.” I furrow my brow at Luke, looking around for a way forward or anyone heading our direction.

“International crime syndicate, right? They’ve definitely got connections.”

With a tiny nod, one I only offer because, yeah, that’s true. I freeze for a moment because I think I hear something out in the distance.

“Is that?—”
