“I can still ‘work’ for you?” I raise my brows at Luke as I meet his eyes again. “Treat this like a live-in health care service?”

He smiles, laughing through his nose. “If that’ll make you feel better about it, sure.”

“My niece needs expensive surgery. It’s why I agreed with this whole thing in the first place, so yes, it makes me feel better.”

Luke sits up a bit straighter, narrowing his eyes. “Niece, huh?”

I just nod.

Luke is quiet for a second, and for the briefest moment, I see his eyes go to the table as he clenches his jaw.

“Okay, yeah. Live-in health service. I’m paying for your help while providing a convenient place to stay since you can’t exactly go home right now.”

I’m about to say something, I’m not even sure what really, when Doris comes back with our drinks and food.

It smells incredible, nostalgic and familiar, even if I’ve never been here, and my stomach rumbles.

“Eat up, doc.”

With a smile, I dig into the fries, practically groaning at how good they taste. The truffle addition was a fantastic choice.

Luke tries a fried pickle, dipping it in the spicy orange sauce they come with.

“Hmm, not bad. Can’t say I’d ever tried one before you suggested it. Looks like you’re full of good ideas, darlin’.”

I have to laugh at that. I have to, or I’m going to be groaning over something else, and I’m still desperately trying to cling to the idea that this is all strictly business.

And for, you know, safety.

“I have my moments, that’s true.”

Luke takes a sip of his beer, and I remember I have one, too, joining him in washing down the grease and salt with the full-bodied beverage.

“So, how’d you get into surgery, anyway?”

The question catches me off guard, and I cough a little, smiling as I wipe my mouth with a napkin.

“Oh, well. I’ve always been interested in medicine. Growing up, Regina and I always joked about our dream jobs when we were finally able to leave the house. I’m older, so I made sure to bring her with me.”

With a downward tilt of his lips, Luke nods. “Your sister, I take it.”

I smile, nodding. “Yup. Regina and I have been inseparable since the day she was born. It’s my job to keep her safe, keep her stable.”

Luke barks a laugh. “You sound like my older brother.”

Cocking my head, I take a pickle and a fry together, giving the combo a go.

“The one who was in that warehouse with you? The one who was in trouble?”

“Oh, well, the guy I’m talking about was there. Jay. But the one who was in trouble is Dom.”

“Oh, you have two brothers?” I raise my brows.

“I have two brothers by blood and another two by bond.”

Luke seems to catch himself being rather open and looks up at the ceiling with a shake of his head.

“You’re very easy to talk to, doc.”
