“Seldarin and I are sworn to the service of the Princess,” Krynn said coolly. “Neither of us is interested in anyone else.”

“Well, well—it seems you have them wrapped around your little finger, my dear,” Lady Elgiana purred, smiling at me. “So which of them are you going to fuck? Or are you going to let one of them fuck you?”

“You’ll have to wait and see. I don’t care to discuss it any further,” I said. “Could someone please pass the wine? I’m thirsty.”

This statement sent a ripple of dismay down the length of the High Table and one of the servants quickly poured me a large goblet of wine.

I went through the motions of eating and drinking, but I barely had any appetite, to be honest. It didn’t take long for the word to get around that I would be doing a Public Quenching after the banquet. Soon everyone sitting at the lower tables was staring at me and whispering behind their hands. Probably they were speculating about the same thing Lady Elgiana had been—which of my two companions I would either fuck or be fucked by.

Mordren sat there with an empty plate looking angry. Apparently he’d been counting on me being too embarrassed to “suck and fuck” someone in front of the whole Court and was certain he was going to get another hundred years to rule as he pleased.

Lady Elgiana continued to look amused. She kept casting speculative looks at both Sel and Krynn, as though guessing which one of them I was going to take.

Lady Nolana kept giving me sympathetic looks but she didn’t try to discuss the situation, for which I was grateful. I really didn’t want to talk about this.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage it. I had never put on any kind of sex show before—I’d been a stay-at-home mom, not a stripper, after all. And I had certainly never pegged anyone in the past—Christopher would never have been interested in taking the submissive role in our love life. So I was afraid this was going to be a really strange and awkward experience. But I really had no choice—it was this or let Mordren keep control and that was out of the question.

Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I rose abruptly and put my napkin on the table.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need to get ready,” I said, nodding briefly to the others at the table.

“I hope you’re not planning on running away again, Princess,” Mordren said sharply. “If you don’t show up to the Public Quenching and demonstrate to the entire Court your Thirst is quenched and your sexual need is satiated, you’ll automatically cede the leadership of the Dark Fae to me for another hundred years.”

“I’m well aware of that,” I said sharply. “Don’t worry—I’ll be there.”

Then I left the table with my guys behind me and the entire Court whispering and watching with wide eyes as we exited the Banquet Hall once more.

“This way, my Lady,” Krynn said, taking the lead as we left the Banquet Hall. “The Public Quenching will be held in the Palace Theater. There should be costumes and harnesses as well as phalluses to choose from in the Queen’s private dressing area,” he added.

“Wait—they have a whole theater for this kind of thing?” I demanded as I followed him. “I mean, for Public Quenchings?”

“That’s not the only thing the theater is used for—the Palace has a troupe of actors that put on regular plays,” Sel remarked. “But the Queen does put on Public Quenchings from time to time—just to prove to the people that her Thirst is still under control.”

“I think Mordren was betting that you’d balk at doing one because you weren’t raised with our customs,” Krynn said. He raised an eyebrow at me. “I’m assuming this isn’t the kind of thing that humans generally do to each other?”

“Well, certainly not the biting part,” I said. “As for the other, you can watch porn for that. But I’ve never done it myself.”

“Don’t worry—we’ll help you,” Sel promised. “Look—the theater is just up ahead.

He was pointing down a long, marble corridor that ended in a set of broad doors flanked with golden pillars on either side. The golden molding above the doors and pillars was shaped into various masks—happy, sad, angry, excited… They made it clear what the space was for.

Seldarin pulled open one of the heavy wooden doors and I followed him and Krynn into a dim space filled with rows upon rows of red velvet chairs. There was enough seating for the entire court—at least five or six hundred chairs, I estimated—maybe more. Just the thought of that many people watching what I was about to do was enough to make me feel like my whole face was on fire with embarrassment.

But I told myself again there was no choice—the show had to go on. I had no place in the human world or the “Mortal Realm” as Sel and Krynn called it, anymore. I looked too different and too much had happened for me to go back to that life. I had to lean in to my new role and this was the only way to do it.

I followed Sel and Krynn down the inclined floor which ended at a large wooden stage. A long crimson curtain was drawn all the way down, hiding all but the front or apron of the stage.

“This way,” Sel rumbled and led us up a set of steps to one side of the stage which led us into the vast, shadowy backstage area.

“Looks like it’s already set up for a Public Quenching,” Krynn remarked. “See? They already have the frame.”

Standing in the middle of this darkened area at exactly center stage was a massive wooden X that looked big enough to accommodate even the largest Fae. It was padded with deep blue leather and there were leather straps at all four corners. Directly behind it was a set of wooden stairs that looked adjustable.

“That’s where you’ll be standing, Princess.” Sel pointed to the steps. “Otherwise you’d never be able to reach Krynn.”
