“What?” Julian asked.

“I’m the one who must call the vessel.”

Julian nodded and passed her the paper.

Cassia’s body hummed with shifter magick. She looked to the spell and repeated it in her mind three times, memorizing the words.

As she closed her eyes, she called on her beast and imagined the hellhounds in her mind’s eye. Secret of Hell. Come to me now. “Cum Dea mecum et circum, portam poscimus ehe. Secretum revela inferni et vas dimitte. Aroya.”

The flames stung her fingers as Thorn’s note ignited. She dropped the smoking rice paper, and the room began shaking, the brick walls crumbling from within.

“Get them out!” Julian called to Greyson.

The ancient vampire wasted no time. Greyson, Dominique and Rafe disappeared from the chamber. As Julian reached to touch Cassia, she jumped away from him. A thunderous noise rumbled as large shards of stone crumbled, falling down into the chamber, narrowly missing Cassia.

“No! One more second. Look. There. I can get it,” she screamed to him.

“No Cass, let me. I don’t want anything to happen to?—".”

From beneath their feet, the floor cracked open, revealing a deep crevasse. Before Julian had a chance to stop her she threw herself onto the cold ground and reached inside.

Cassia curled her fingers around the object as Julian reached for her and they disappeared.

“It’s an egg,” she exclaimed. A rush of adrenaline tore through her veins. Unable to take her eyes off her prize, she barely noticed Julian staring at her. “What? What’s wrong? This is great! Look. I’ve got it! Wait … what is it?”

“It’s silver, that’s what it is,” Rafe told her.

“You could’ve been killed,” Julian scolded.

“Yeah, I could have but then I wouldn’t have this.” She smiled and raised an eyebrow at him.

“We’ll talk about this later. I think we should flash back to New York.”

“Leave Idaho?” she asked.

“My place is burned down. I’ve got a house on the lake but I don’t think we should stay here. That sect could still be here. Too risky.” Julian reached inside his jacket and retrieved his phone. “I’ve got a text from Sayuri.”

“Sayuri?”

“She wants to see us. Without Thorn. It has something to do with the hellhounds and the vessel.”

“I think we should go,” Cassia said. “Maybe she knows more about the Aroya.”

Julian looked down to read her next text and held it up to Greyson so he could see it.

“No way.” Greyson grinned.

“We’ve gotta leave here anyway. You wanna take the jet or do you have the juice to flash?”

“No time to jet. It’ll take too long. I’m good. I do, however, have to make a pit stop.” Greyson stretched out his arms and placed his palms onto Dominique and Rafe. “See ya on the other side.”

“Wait. Where are they going?” Cassia asked.

“My guess is Kade’s. This place isn’t safe … we need to get out of here.”

“But I—” Cassia lost her words as Julian wrapped her in his embrace and they dematerialized.
