She shook her head. “Forget it.”

She was suddenly shy and unlike the type of woman I was used to. I replaced the pillow. “Safety wall is engaged. Now you can tell me.”

She giggled. “Like a confessional?”

“Yes. Now, tell me how you think you’ll sin, my child.” It would be helpful if I could conjure up a picture of her as a kid right about now.

“Sometimes I naturally seek out the heat in the bed.”

“You’re worried you’ll—what? Cuddle me?”

“Mm-hm.”

A cuddle sounded both incredible and like torture.

The sound of a soft yawn came from the other side of the pillow. “Thanks for rescuing me from the sex couch, Max.”

My smile was wide. “Anytime. Get some sleep.”

I stirred in my slumber, waking to the sound of heavy breathing. It took me a moment to remember where I was and that Oakley was on the other side of the fluffy mountain. Like a creeper, I couldn’t resist moving the pillow in front of me so I could see her face.

She was the picture of beauty and innocence, her hair splayed out on the white sheets. It was times like this I struggled with my life choices. The harsh reality was I could never have a woman like Oakley. She deserved to find a man who could give her a future, the kind which included a house in the suburbs—probably next to my sister—kids, a minivan, and weekends spent doing family things like soccer and YMCA shit. Not a guy who worked at a sex club with few weekends off, who didn’t want kids, and who wasn’t even sure he was capable of a meaningful romantic relationship.

Replacing the pillow, I turned and scrubbed my hands over my face.

I rolled onto my side, ready to get back to sleep when a gasp had me turning toward Oakley. I was about to check on her when a low moan put my entire body on notice.

Chapter Nine

Oakley

The erotic setting was familiar. Only this time, my eyes weren’t covered with a blindfold. Instead, my gaze was fixated on the man kissing the inside of my thighs. His sandy hair was familiar. I trusted this man. I knew this man. He focused on my clit, making me gasp at the contact. Two fingers moved deep inside of me, causing me to moan. He looked up with a devilish grin I’d know anywhere.

Max.

“Oakley.” His voice penetrated my fading dream. It was husky, sexy, but out of place in the scene.

“Wake up, sweetheart.”

“Huh?” My eyes flew open to see the face from my dreams bathed in the moonlight.

“I think you were having a nightmare.”

Definitely wasn’t a nightmare, but this certainly felt like the start to one.

He turned on the bedside lamp and sat up, his gaze fixed on me. I noticed the moment he realized where my hand was. It was a beat before I did.

Frack. I removed it quickly, realizing too late my fingers were coated with my arousal. I moved to hide the evidence but not before he grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”

“Don’t what?” My whisper was barely audible. This was the point where he should be turning red, and I should be humiliated. Instead, the heat of his gaze made my body shake.

“Don’t be embarrassed. It’s hot as fuck.”

I blamed my blurted-out thought on the fact I no longer had brain cells accessible. “You’re not gay?”

Instead of being offended, he chuckled. “Is that the rumor?”
