“No, you shut up. At least for the next two days. You will play nice and make Kate think we’re getting along. Otherwise, I’ll tell Max to call your boss. And since he’s probably already unhappy with your work based on your phone call yesterday, I’m assuming Max’s additional information might not go over well. Do you understand?”

I could practically hear his teeth grinding. Among other things, Shawn was a poor loser. “Fine.”

He remained civil for the rest of the rehearsal, if you could call pouting and giving me the cold shoulder well-mannered. Keeping up my fake smiles had been torture, but by the end of the rehearsal, I could call my performance a success.

We had a few minutes after returning to the hotel before dinner, allowing me time to run up to the room. Upon entering, I was treated to the sight of Max dressed up in a well-tailored suit. He was using the wall mirror to put on his tie.

I whistled low. “Looking good.”

He turned with a grin. His smile soon faded as he surveyed me from head to toe, his expression giving me goose bumps and taking up the temperature in the room several degrees. “You look incredible. Did Shawn behave at the church?”

My immediate frown must’ve clued him in.

“I’m going to—”

“No, no, you’re not. I can fight my own battles.” The last thing Max needed was any more problems this weekend. He had enough going on with his parents. Not only that, but judging by my last conversation with Kate, I’d be the one blamed for any drama.

“Here, let me help.” I walked over and took hold of his tie, loving the excuse to be close to him. His cologne smelled divine. Masculine and fresh, it made me want to shove my face into his shirt and breathe deep.

“How much time do we have?” he asked huskily.

I groaned at the unfairness of it all. “Not enough. I have pictures in five minutes.”

He peppered my neck with kisses, making my entire body shiver. “We’ll have plenty of time tonight.”

“Does that mean you went shopping?”

“Big box by the bed.”

My glance zeroed in on the large box of condoms on the nightstand. “How many do you think we’ll need?”

“Mm. Depends on how you feel about walking tomorrow.”

Good Lord. It was going to be a very long dinner.

Chapter Thirteen

Max

I’d dreaded this evening all day long. I’d even gone so far as to text my sister, hoping she’d tell me she didn’t want me attending the dinner after all. No such luck. But then Oakley had walked in, and my night took a turn for the better.

“I need something before I go,” she said, framing my face.

“Name it.”

“This.” She pressed her lips against mine, slipping her tongue inside my mouth and making me want to ravish her on the spot.

“You’ll ruin your lipstick.”

“I don’t care.”

Jesus, she was addictive. “We’d better go before I tie you up and make you late.”

The way her eyes blazed revealed how much the idea turned her on.

“You and I need to have a talk about your fantasies. I want to hear all of them.” My words had the desired effect when she shivered, but then she averted her eyes.

Shit, I’d pushed her too hard. Tying her up with her panties last night had been hot as hell. It was a pretty soft kink in my view, but it had probably been a big step for her. Her reaction now reconfirmed my view that although we’d enjoy this weekend together, she’d never fit into my world. The thought made me unexpectedly sad. “We’d better go.”
