His brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“I mean when she told him to stop. She was arguing with him when we left. Did you not notice?”

“Guess I didn’t pay attention to it. Are you angry I didn’t tell you about owning the club?”

“Why would I be? Your secret is something you choose to share or not.”

“I almost told you the first night. I just didn’t want to ruin it.”

My nose scrunched up in confusion. “Did you think if I’d known about the club, I wouldn’t have wanted to sleep with you?” Quite the opposite.

“Yeah. But I don’t only own the club; I also perform there. It felt good for a change to have a normal weekend with a sexy woman without it being about the club.”

There was that word again. Normal. “Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“When you perform, is there adrenaline from knowing you’re being watched?” Picturing it made my body tingle.

“At first, yes, but I guess the novelty wears off after a while. I got burnt out.”

Not the answer I wanted to hear. “I see.”

He sighed. “It’s tough to explain, but at the club you and your partner are performing for everyone else’s pleasure. Not your own.”

“You’re putting on an act?”

“Yes. I’m not saying it’s not enjoyable, but when it’s your job, you lose some of your enthusiasm for it. I don’t mean to burst your bubble about what it’s like.”

Dammit. He had. A little. I’d assumed his performances were as hot for him as they were for the spectators. “Who, um, are the women you’re with?”

It was the first time I’d seen him truly uncomfortable, and I wondered if his dad’s comments were in the back of his mind. “Some of the women from the club. They’re performers too. It’s all consensual.”

Of course it would be. Given Max’s skill as a lover, I would bet there were any number of women lined up to perform with him.

He cleared his voice. “We shouldn’t be talking about this.”

“Why not?” I had a lot more questions.

“Because the club isn’t your world.”

“That’s your father’s voice in your head. You said the club is a place where people can go and not feel judged. Did you mean it?”

“Of course I did.”

“Then I’m ready to tell you my fantasy. The truth this time.”

He took the next exit and pulled off onto the side of the road.

Max

I turned toward her in the darkened cab of my SUV. “Tell me.”

“I have a fantasy about being watched.” She covered her face with her hands as if she couldn’t believe the words had come out of her mouth.

“Watched how? Like the window last night where you could think someone might see you?”

“Yes, but more. Like being on display.”
