I opened the door. “Max. What a surprise!”

He grinned, taking in my outfit change with a raised brow. “Can I come in?”

“Of course.” I ushered him into my apartment. “What are you doing here?”

He leaned in to whisper in my ear. “Not sure why you bothered to put on more clothes when they’re about to come off shortly.”

I smirked. “You’re awfully sure of yourself.”

He straightened up, the sidebar over. “I missed you this morning. I was hoping we could talk.”

“Talk about what?”

“About more.”

My lips parted. “More?”

“Yeah. I want to take you out on a proper date and spend more time with you. But I realize it would involve some sacrifice on your part. I’m the owner of a sex club, although maybe for the first time in my life I’m learning to be unapologetic about it. But it does mean I work weekends, late nights, and with women I’ve slept with before.”

I swallowed hard. “Do you want to sleep with them again?”

“Nope. I want to be a one-woman guy from now on.”

“Gosh, I hope that woman is me; otherwise, this entire thing is awkward.”

He burst out laughing. “I hope it’ll be you.”

“I can’t promise I won’t get jealous from time to time, but I don’t know...maybe Daniella has some tips.”

“I’m sure she does.” He rubbed his thumb over my bottom lip. Then he kissed me. “Oakley?”

“Mm.” His lips behind my ear had me shivering with anticipation.

“Will you go out on a first date with me?”

“Absolutely. After you make good on your promise and get me out of these clothes.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

Max

Our first date consisted of picking up Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and heading to my loft apartment. I normally guarded my space and didn’t invite women to my loft, but bringing Oakley there felt natural. Better than natural. It felt like the beginning of something special.

“Your place is beautiful.”

I saw the exposed brick walls and rustic leather sofas through her eyes. I’d wanted Aspen ski lodge meets industrial chic. Basically, I liked being comfortable. “Thank you.”

I set out dishes on the small dinette table and brought us two beers. “This all right?” As far as first dates went, it wasn’t fancy. But the thought of taking her to a crowded restaurant wasn’t appealing, either, because I wanted her all to myself.

We both ate in silence for the next few minutes, only commenting on how good the food was until I had to say what was on my mind. “We need to talk about some more things.”

She took a big bite of her dinner. “Sounds serious.”

I wanted to ensure we were on the same page long term. “I don’t want kids.”

She chuckled. “Then let’s agree not to make any, okay?”

“I’m serious. I had a vasectomy years ago and have never wanted children.” I didn’t scorn those who did, but I didn’t see a family in my future.
