Page 12 of Enduring Darkness

That sadistic smile curls his lips again. As if he is enjoying the fear he no doubt sees in my eyes. He takes a step forward.

Alarm flares up my spine, and I edge another step back. “Kaden, please.”

His eyes glint. “That’s better.”

But he still continues advancing on me. My gaze darts desperately around the rooftop, looking for a way out that doesn’t involve falling off the edge and plummeting a hundred feet down to the asphalt below. But unless I can get past him and get to the door behind him, I’m trapped here.

Panic crackles through me. If I’m going to make a move, I need to do it now.

Darting to the side, I try to sprint past him.

His hand shoots out and locks around my throat. I jerk to a stop as my escape comes to an abrupt halt. With my heart pounding in my chest, I raise my panicked gaze to Kaden’s face.

He smiles like the fucking villain he is.

The muscles in his forearm shift as he flexes his fingers around my throat and then uses his grip to move me back so that I’m standing right in front of him again.

Then he starts backing me towards the edge.

Terror floods my veins.

While digging my heels into the concrete roof, I raise my hands and try to pry his fingers from my throat. It’s no use. In the face of his overwhelming strength, I’m completely helpless.

My stomach drops as my heels reach the edge of the roof. But Kaden doesn’t stop. He takes one more step, forcing me to arch my back so that half of my body is now hanging over the edge. My feet are still on the roof, but the rest of me isn’t.

I immediately stop trying to pry his fingers from my throat and instead wrap both my hands around his toned forearm, because his grip on my throat is now the only thing keeping me from falling off the roof. Wind whips through my hair.

With my pulse pounding in my ears, I stare into Kaden’s dark eyes.

He looks like a prince of hell.

Lethally handsome.

Sharp and severe and cold as ice.

Impassive as a god.

And my undoing.

“Please,” I beg.

“Do you see how easy this was?” Kaden pushes forward, forcing me to bend my body even farther out over the edge of the roof. “Do you see how easy it is for me to get to you?”

I tighten my grip on his forearm as panic surges through me. “Yes. Yes, I see it.”

“At Carla’s party. In the sparring room. In the middle of a crowded lecture hall.” His intense eyes sear into mine. “No one dares to stop me. Do you know what that means?”

“Yes. No.” Fear is scrambling my brain, and I can’t figure out what the right answer is, so instead I repeat, “Please.”

He leans closer. “It means that when I tell you to do something, you obey.”

“Yes. Yes, I understand. Please.”

“And don’t even think about telling your brothers and cousins about what I do to you.”

I wouldn’t have done that anyway, because then they would just have taken away my freedom. But I don’t want to tell Kaden that, so I just reply, “I won’t. I promise.”

For another few seconds, he just continues watching me in silence. My heart hammers against my ribs. I draw in sharp, shallow breaths as winds tug at my clothes and whirl through my hair, making it brush against my lower back.
