A laugh bubbles from my chest, and warmth fills my soul. Matching his grin, I give him a quick rise and fall of my eyebrows. “Careful now. If you do that, I might just ruin you.”

“You already have.” Standing up from his chair, he leans right across our table and wraps his hand around my throat before claiming my mouth in a possessive kiss. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

My heart swells so much that it’s practically bursting with light. I smile against Kaden’s lips as he steals one more kiss before releasing me and sitting down again.

At the table next to us, a man in a dark blue shirt openly stares at us.

Kaden turns his head towards him.

Since the staff at this mansion expressed concerns about the highly visible blades that Kaden was wearing, he now carries his knives in a holster underneath his suit jacket instead of around his thighs.

With his gaze locked on the man who is still gaping at us, Kaden slips a hand underneath his suit jacket and slides out a knife. Fire pools in my belly as he effortlessly twirls the blade in his hand.

One of his signature psychopath smiles slides across his lips as he spins the knife again while holding the man’s gaze. “If you cannot keep your eyes on the ground, I can always cut them out and put them there for you.”

Silverware rattles as the man jerks back so fast that he slams his knee into the table leg. With fear pulsing across his face, he scrambles out of his seat and hurries towards the double doors on the other side of the room. I watch him yank open one of the intricately carved oak doors and beat a hasty retreat.

Arching an eyebrow, I slide my gaze back to Kaden while I’m trying to stifle both a laugh and a sigh of exasperation.

He just lifts his broad shoulders in a casual shrug and slides the knife back underneath his suit jacket before picking up his wine glass.

At last, the laugh wins out. Shaking my head, I chuckle under my breath and then reach for my own glass as well. But before I can pick it up, a man approaches our table. I brush my hands down over my blue silk dress, getting ready to apologize to the manager of the restaurant.

But the man who stops at our table is not the manager.

For a few seconds, I can’t process what’s going on.

What the hell is he doing here?

Eric Wilson, my former fiancé, looks down at us from where he is now standing just a step away. As usual, he is impeccably dressed, his blond hair is slicked back, and there is a hint of casual arrogance in his blue eyes. He fits right in at a mansion type hotel like this, which is probably why I didn’t spot him until he walked right up to us. I frown, studying his face. Annoyance and displeasure line his features.

“I won’t let you do this,” he announces.

Kaden slides his cold eyes to Eric, and the temperature in the room plummets so severely that I’m surprised my breath doesn’t cloud before my face when I speak.

“No one lets me do anything,” I reply, raising my chin and leveling a hard look on Eric. “Least of all you.”

But Eric just shakes his head and looks at me as if I’m a stupid little girl who doesn’t understand how the world works.

“You heard her,” Kaden growls from across the table. “Now, leave before I cut that disrespectful tongue out of your fucking mouth.”

“You can’t be serious!” Eric blurts out, his eyes still only focused on me, as he throws out an arm and stabs a hand in Kaden’s direction. “You can’t possibly want to marry that.”

“Do not speak about him that way,” I warn, my voice turning low and vicious.

“He’s a psychopath! He can’t make you happy. Because he doesn’t even know what happiness is, for God’s sake!”

“Just because you can’t make any woman happy doesn’t mean that everyone else is equally incapable,” I retort.

A frustrated sigh rips from his chest, and he spears his fingers through his hair. Then he draws in a deep breath as if to compose himself and lets his hands drop back down by his sides before fixing me with a serious stare.

“Come with me, Alina,” he says, sounding almost like he’s pleading now. “I swear I will give you anything you want. I can give you more than this psychopath ever could.”

Arching an eyebrow, I drag my gaze up and down his body in a highly dismissive way. “I have seen what you have to offer, and I was left thoroughly underwhelmed.”

Color rises in his cheeks as he flushes with what looks like both anger and embarrassment.

Kaden lets out a low chuckle under his breath and shoots me an approving look that warms my soul.
