I hadn’t actually expected her to pull it off.

When I saw her touching my knives, I was about five seconds away from slitting her throat. Because no one touches my things. Especially not my knives. They’re mine. And no one touches what belongs to me.

Last year, I even came close to skinning Eli’s girlfriend alive because she stole one of my blades.

So when I saw Alina picking one up, every territorial and highly possessive part of me was screaming at me to kill her.

But then she got down on her knees and begged for mercy.

My cock hardens at just the memory of it.

It was the only thing that she could have possibly done to save herself, and she managed to figure it out. That impressed me. More than I will ever admit. And it also made that terrible cold fury fade away.

I wasn’t going to tell her that, though. So I told her that I would let her live only if she managed to stay silent during her entire punishment.

And for the second time that night, my little doe managed to shock me. Because I really, really, hadn’t expected her to pull it off.

Sliding my hand over my lap, I discreetly adjust myself as my cock hardens even more at just the thought of what she looked like back then. Naked and trapped in a spreader bar with her ass in the air. I liked the sight of that. But I found myself liking her stubborn strength even more.

Not a lot of people could have endured that little caning session without so much as a whimper.

That odd thing flickers in my chest again.

I need to find out what it is. And what’s causing it.

“Man, you really are obsessed, aren’t you?”

Snapping my gaze away from where Alina is putting a plate of food on her tray, I lock eyes with Jace and then draw my eyebrows down in a warning scowl. “Watch your mouth, little brother.”

A wide grin full of challenge spreads across his lips. “Or what?”

“Oh, come on,” Rico groans from the chair next to me. Heaving a deep sigh, he fixes Jace with an exasperated stare. “We agreed not to antagonize each other in public. Not while we’re in the middle of dealing with both the Petrovs and Isabella at the same time.”

Jace frowns in confusion. “No, we didn’t.”

“We literally talked about it this morning. At breakfast.”

“Oh.” Jace chuckles and rakes his hand through his messy brown curls before shrugging. “Well, I wasn’t really paying attention.”

“Of course you weren’t, Golden.”

Narrowing his eyes, he yanks his fork up and points it threateningly at Rico. “Don’t call me that.”

“I’ll stop calling you that as soon as you develop an attention span longer than five seconds.”

“Five seconds?” Jace gasps dramatically and presses his hand against his chest in a show of shock. “I’ll have you know that my current record is actually eight seconds.”

A surprised laugh escapes Rico’s throat.

Jace grins at him before lifting his shoulders in a nonchalant shrug. “It was when I mopped the floor with Kaden at that video game the other week.”

While they were bickering, my gaze had wandered back to Alina as she walked towards the table where the rest of her family are seated, but now I snap it back to my annoying little brother.

“You didn’t mop the floor with me,” I declare, scowling at him.

“Yeah, I did.” His brown eyes glitter as he flashes me a mischievous smile. “Which is why you had to make dinner that night.” He cocks his head, looking contemplative. “Though sadly without a pretty little apron on.”

Narrowing my eyes, I stare him down. “I will fucking stab you.”
