A jolt pulses through me as his hand locks around my throat. While pinning me to the wall, he moves impossibly closer. I suck in an unsteady breath while my heart hammers against my ribs.

“Remember what I told you on the rooftop.” He leans down until I can feel his breath dance over my lips with every word, but his eyes are merciless as they remain locked on mine. “When I give you an order, you obey.”

I can barely breathe. Not because of his hand around my throat. But rather because I feel like I’m drowning in him. In his intoxicating scent. In his dark voice. In his intense eyes. In his commanding hand on my body. In the sheer dominance that seems to roll off his shoulders like black smoke. And most of all, in the closeness of those dangerous lips.

Right before I can do something absolutely insane, Kaden pulls back again. I drag in a shuddering breath to clear my head. But his hand stays around my throat, pinning me to the wall, as he levels a commanding stare on me.

“So, let’s try this again,” he says. “Why are you still naked?”

“Some girls in my class pulled a prank on me,” I reply. It wasn’t exactly a prank, but it’s true enough that I don’t think Kaden will spot the lie. “They took my towel and my clothes while I was showering.”

His eyes flash.

The sight of it stuns me enough that I draw back in shock and blink at him. But that flash is gone so quickly that, only a second later, I begin doubting if I even saw it at all. It must have just been the fluorescents, because when he speaks, his voice is calm almost to the point of sounding disinterested.

“And why would they do that?”

“Because I’m terrible and I’m not even here to become an assassin,” I reply honestly.

His eyes narrow slightly. “Then why are you here?”

I press my lips together.

He tightens his grip on my throat, displeasure flitting across his features. “Do not make me ask you again.”

Frustration rips through me, and I throw my arms out in annoyance as I glare up at the demanding psycho. “Because I wanted freedom!”

“From what?”

“From everything!” My chest is suddenly heaving with anger and pent-up frustration, but I’m too annoyed at Kaden, for forcing me to tell him this, to care. “From my life. From my family. From the future that is looming over my head like an executioner’s axe. Everyone treats me like a glass figurine to be put on a shelf. So I’m here because I just wanted to live for a few years without being suffocated by that feeling.”

The words just tumbled out of me like a flood. Once I had started speaking, I couldn’t stop. But now that they’re out, I regret every single word.

Kaden cocks his head, studying me with a pensive expression on his stupidly stunning face.

Embarrassment washes over me.

I shouldn’t have told him that. I didn’t want him to know that, and now he’s just going to use it against me.

Letting my arms drop to my sides, I slump back against the wall and close my eyes while I wait for him to start tormenting me again.

Kaden removes his hand from my throat, but I don’t bother opening my eyes. I’m so physically outmatched against him that I couldn’t win even if I tried. He can do whatever he wants to me, and there is nothing I can do to stop him, so I just stand there and wait for the axe to fall.

Fabric rustles.

Then something soft is pressed against my skin.

I snap my eyes open and blink down at my chest.

“Take it,” Kaden orders.

Confusion whirls through me.

For another few seconds, I just stare at the bundle of black fabric that Kaden is holding against my chest. Then I drag my gaze up to him.

Lightning crackles through my veins.

Kaden is standing before me… shirtless.
