Page 7 of Enduring Darkness

I’m just about to simply stalk back home when a voice stops me. Or rather, a name.

“Alina,” a female voice calls. “You’re here! I saw you and your brothers and cousins drive away together this morning when I went for my run, so I was worried you’d be gone all weekend.”

All of my senses sharpen as I turn towards the source of the voice. It belongs to Carla, the first-year who lives in this house. Or at least one of the first-years who live here. Her dark curls are pulled up in an elaborate style, and her gold-shimmering dress glitters as she hugs a smaller figure.

Anticipation ripples through me as I study that smaller figure.

Alina Petrov.

She’s here.

“Oh, no, it was just a short family meeting,” Alina says as she steps back after Carla’s hug. “I wouldn’t miss this party for anything.”

“Good.” Carla grins and jerks her chin towards the still open glass doors. “Now, go on in and start getting drunk. You have some catching up to do.”

While staying out of Alina’s direct line of sight, I study her as she says something else to Carla and then laughs before heading towards the doors. Her long blonde hair ripples as she walks. It falls almost all the way down to the small of her back like a smooth waterfall. Which is a great length for a variety of… restraining methods.

She’s wearing a pale blue dress that ends halfway down her thighs, leaving her slim legs and arms on display. I slide my gaze to her delicate wrists and ankles. She would look fantastic in some metal shackles. In rope too. But most of all, those big doe eyes of hers would look incredible brimming with fear.

Making a split-second decision, I walk over to the back of the house to check if it’s as crowded as the front. It’s not. Only one couple is making out in the shadows of the corner.

I hurry back to the front and grab the first person I come across.

“Hey, what the hell?” The guy I grabbed, a blond second-year who slurs a little when he talks, spins towards me. He glares down at my hand around his arm before looking up to meet my gaze. His eyes go wide and color drains from his face. “Oh. Fuck. Hunter.”

“You see that skinny blonde who walked inside a minute ago?” I demand.

His gaze flicks down to the knife I’m still twirling in my hand for a second before returning to my face. “The one who was talking to Carla?”

“Yes.”

“Yeah, I saw her.”

“Go in there and tell her that Carla needs her help with something out back.”

“Wh—”

“Now.”

“Alright. Alright.” He swallows and casts another wary glance down at my knife before backing away.

I release his arm but watch to make sure that he follows my orders and goes inside. He does.

Once he’s out of sight, I move towards the back of the house again. The two people in the corner are still making out. I stride towards them.

“Take a hike,” I order.

They jerk back from each other and turn towards me. One look is enough to make them straighten their clothes and hurry away. I move so that I’m standing on the other side of the back door. And then I wait.

Alina appears only a minute later.

Her pale hair shines like silver in the moonlight as she sticks her head out and squints into the darkness. “Carla?”

Thumping music and the sounds of talking drift out into the night from inside as Alina pushes the door open wider and steps out onto the small patio. There is a red plastic cup in her hand.

I wait for the door to fall shut again before taking a step out of the shadows.

“Carla?” Alina says. “Are you here? David said you needed help.”
