Jace starts towards the doorway to their living room, but then he pauses after only a few steps. Turning around, he looks back at me again. “Piece of advice? Kneel, place your palms flat on the floor, and then press your forehead to the ground before his feet.”

I blink and then frown at him in confusion.

He lifts his broad shoulders in a casual shrug. “He likes that.”

Before I can think of a reply, he turns back around and disappears into the living room.

I stare after him.

Kneel and press my forehead to the floor before Kaden’s feet? I don’t fucking think so.

There is a bat leaning against the inside of a metal container that looks like it’s made to hold umbrellas. Actually, there are three bats in there. And not a single umbrella. After casting a quick look towards the doorway to the living room, I wrap my fingers around the handle of the closest bat and carefully pull it out.

My heart patters in my chest, but the bat comes free without making the other two clank against each other.

While imagining the sound Kaden will make when I slam this into his fucking head, I adjust my grip on the handle and hurry up the steps to the upstairs corridor. It’s empty as well, so I stalk down it until I reach the door to Kaden’s room.

Not bothering to so much as knock, I simply yank open the door and storm inside with the bat raised in my right hand.

Kaden is standing in the middle of his room. As usual, it’s meticulously neat and clean with the bed perfectly made and everything in its proper place.

When I opened the door, there was a dark and dangerous look on his face. But as soon as his gaze lands on the bat in my hand, I swear I can see amusement glitter in his cold eyes.

It makes me fucking furious.

Before he can even say anything, I shift the bat into a two-handed grip and swing it straight at his head.

Without breaking eye contact, Kaden simply yanks up a hand and grabs the bat midair.

I jerk back in surprise. With both hands still on the handle, I try to pull the bat free. But even though he’s holding it with just one hand, the damn thing doesn’t move an inch no matter how much I yank at it.

Mirth dances across his severe face again.

“Tell me, little doe,” he begins with a faint smile on his lips. “Once you had bashed my head in with my brother’s bat, what was your plan for finding the keys to the chastity belt? If I’m dead, I can’t tell you where they are.”

“You don’t need to tell me where they are.”

He arches a dark brow. “Oh?”

“I already know.”

“Do tell.”

“You’re organized and meticulous, which means that you would never leave them lying around just anywhere. But you also crave absolute control and you live for power plays, so you want the keys within easy reach so that you can dangle them in front of my face. Literally. Which means that the keys are in your pocket.”

The smile that spreads across his face makes my heart lurch. And not for the reason that it probably should.

Faint metallic clinking fills the room as Kaden slides his other hand into the pocket of his dark pants and pulls out a small ring with two keys on it.

His eyes glint as he dangles them in the air while that smile stays on his lips. “Clever.”

I lunge for the keys.

The moment my right hand leaves the bat, Kaden yanks it out of my grip while simultaneously jerking his other hand up so that I can’t reach the keys. My fingers swipe through the air right where the keys used to be a second too late.

Kaden tuts and shakes his head.

Now weaponless, I lower my arms again and instead cross them over my chest as I glare up at the annoying man before me.
