“What costume party?” I demand.

She lifts her shoulders in an impressively casual shrug. “I thought I told you about that.”

“Right.” I give her a flat look. “Sure you did.”

We continue walking in silence down the street.

The streetlamps cast warm pools of light on the dark asphalt, and light from the buildings we pass shine out into the warm night.

I let a sly smile slide home on my lips as I glance down at Kayla. “So, what are we going as?”

Her brows furrow in confusion as she looks up at me. “We?”

“Yeah.” I shrug as I continue strolling along next to her. “Since we’re going together, we might as well do a couple’s costume.”

Incredulity pulses across her features. Then she shoots me a hard stare and stalks ahead. Her words cut through the warm night with the sharpness of a blade.

“We are not doing a couple’s costume.”

KAYLA

Apparently, we are doing a couple’s costume. I’m dressed as a sexy policewoman, for reasons that Jace is about to find out very soon, and he is dressed as himself, which is a hitman. He even wore all black for the occasion. Black pants, black combat boots, and a tight-fitting black shirt that shows off every inch of his sculpted body and makes girls turn their heads to stare at him as we walk through the door and into the grand building where the party is in full swing.

Cop and criminal. Technically a couple’s costume, which Jace has pointed out no less than five times already.

The smell of perfume and spilled alcohol hangs in the air like mist as we make our way through the packed hallway and towards the ballroom on the other side of the building. As opposed to the party last weekend, this one isn’t hosted by just a single person in their own home. This massive costume party is hosted by none other than Ivy River’s Society for Dramatic Arts. And say what you will about drama students, but they do know how to throw a party.

“I’m impressed,” Jace comments from right next to me.

“Of course you are,” I reply. “I’m sure you’ve never seen a party like this at your university.”

Turning to face me, he levels a pointed look at me. “First of all, we throw epic parties at Blackwater. And secondly, I meant I’m impressed that we managed to make it all the way here without you trying to sneak off even once.”

I roll my eyes. “As if hitmen know how to party.”

“Uhm, excuse me…” He stares at me with a look of absolute affront on his face while gesturing up and down his own body. “Have you met me?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

“Oh my God,” an excited voice interrupts before Jace can retort.

Both of us turn to find Aurora skipping towards us, her green eyes sparkling with joy. She’s wearing a white gauzy dress with gold accessories that make her look like some kind of Greek goddess. Her long blonde hair is styled into loose waves, and it ripples behind her as she comes to a halt before us.

“Are you wearing a couple’s costume?” she says.

“No,” I mutter at the same time as Jace says, “Yes.”

She lets out a little squeal and grins. “You guys are adorable.” A sly smile plays over her lips as she looks us up and down before she gives me a conspiratorial wink. “And hot.”

Well, she’s right about that at least. I’m wearing a short navy-blue skirt and a low-cut top with a fake badge that imitates a police shirt, and a leather belt around my waist with handcuffs hanging from it. I am hot. And Jace is…

Actually, it doesn’t matter what Jace is. He’s not supposed to be here, and we’re not wearing a couple’s costume. So whether he’s hot or not is irrelevant. He might as well be dressed as a house plant for all I care.

Next to me, the seriously overconfident bastard is smirking at the compliment, and probably at the poorly hidden lust that burns in Aurora’s eyes too. I let out a silent scoff. I’m about to wipe that smirk off his mouth and turn him into a wallflower.

“Speaking of hot,” I begin. “I’m going to grab something to drink.”
