“Glad we’re finally on the same page,” I say, just to rub it in even more.

Sliding a hand into my pocket, I pull out the keys to the handcuffs.

Anger still in her eyes, she says nothing as I at last unlock the manacles.

They fall open with two distinct clicks.

Kayla immediately shoots up from the floor.

And attacks.

KAYLA

Shooting up from the floor, I throw my whole weight into it as I tackle Jace. It makes him take one step back. One. Single. Step. Another snarl rips from me as I shove at his muscular body again.

“Fucking bastard!” I scream at him.

I can’t believe that I wished he was here just mere minutes ago when he was the one who had orchestrated this whole thing. I’m going to fucking kill him for this.

He chuckles and then tilts his head to the side as if conceding the point. “Yeah, I know.” Seriousness blows across his features as he fixes me with a commanding stare. “But you needed a practical demonstration. You’re good at slipping your own bodyguards, but you do need them for situations like these. You need me.”

“The only thing I will be needing is a shovel for when I bury your body.”

“You—”

Yanking up a hand, I gasp and point to the door behind him in shock.

He immediately whips around.

Smug victory pulses through me. I can’t believe he fell for that.

But I don’t waste a second. Hooking my foot behind his ankle, I yank his leg out at the same time as I tackle him again. This time, because his balance is off from how he’s twisting towards the door, he actually goes down.

Both of us tumble to the ground as he topples backwards.

He hits the stone floor with me on top of him. The impact is forceful enough to knock the breath out of him.

While he is busy sucking air back into his lungs, I throw my arm out and reach for the manacles attached to a ring in the floor a short distance from us. If I can just get it around his wrist, I’ve won. And then I will make him fucking crawl.

My fingers brush against the cool metal of the shackles.

But before I can grab them, my arm is yanked back as Jace grabs me and twists his hips. I suck in a sharp breath between my teeth as I’m flipped around. My back hits the cold stone floor with a thud. I yank up my hands, but Jace locks his fingers around my wrists, slamming my hands back against the ground above my head. His massive weight is now settled firmly between my spread legs.

“Clever,” he says. Mischief glints in his eyes as he grins down at me. “And so close to succeeding.”

Pulling against his grip, I smirk up at him. “I can’t believe you fell for that. I thought you said that you were smart.”

“When have I ever said that?” He raises his eyebrows in a show of confusion before a smirk tugs at his own lips as well. “Charming? Yes. Funny? Without a doubt. Hot? As hell. But smart?” He tips his head from side to side as if considering. “Not particularly.” His eyes turn serious. “At least not when it comes to you.”

My heart skips a beat.

And I’m suddenly acutely aware of all the places where our bodies are touching.

His warm brown eyes are locked on mine as he continues. “So yes, if you ever want to distract me, pretend that there is a threat to your safety. Because I will always react to that.”

It’s suddenly difficult to breathe. His intense eyes, his protective words, and the way his body is pressing against mine make my heart pound. I drag in unsteady breaths.
