Evan crouched in front of me, gently pressing an ice pack to my lip. With Mom and Dad in Vegas, we’d decided to go back to the house instead of the hospital.

“Doctor will be here in half an hour,” Sammy announced as she dropped down on the couch beside me and snatched the ice pack out of Evan’s hand. “You look like a nice kid. Abi considers you family, so let’s keep you breathing for at least a little longer.”

His eyes, so like Hayat’s, narrowed on her. I grasped his hand, pulling his gaze from her and onto me. “Where did Bentley go?”

Evan’s handsome face twisted into a grimace. “Caprice kept blowing up his phone. Damien called her when he couldn’t get us to answer.”

“Can this night get any more fucked up?” Ali mumbled from Dad’s favorite chair across from me. “If Caprice shows up here, we’re going to need to hide a body. Because I will shank her, for real.”

“Who is Caprice?” Sammy asked, grasping my chin and tilting my head back so she could examine the damage to my face.

“Bentley’s sister,” Ali told her. “But she’s a diva. Thinks that the world revolves just for her.”

Evan rolled his eyes and straightened. “That she follows Sixx around like a lost puppy has nothing to do with it, though, huh?”

My sister bared her teeth at him. “It doesn’t endear her to me, no.”

“I mean, I don’t have any problem disposing of a body,” Sammy tossed out while prodding my cheek.

I yelped at the pain that jolted through my face and slapped her hand away.

“Sorry,” she whispered with remorse, but her grip on my chin became firmer. “I know it hurts, but I’m trying to determine whether anything is fractured.”

“The doctor you insisted on calling will be able to figure that out.” I jerked back, taking the ice pack from her hand, holding it to my cheek myself. “After he stitches up Sixx.”

Sammy laughed like I’d said something funny. “You’re all kinds of hilarious tonight, Abs. You’re my priority. Rocky over there will get patched up after you get a thorough exam. I’m not taking any chances that you could have gotten hurt when you fell. And while your pupils are even, I want you evaluated for a concussion. We are not gambling with your health. Ensuring you are safe has been my only goal. I’m not letting tonight’s adventure risk taking you away from us.”

Tears burned my eyes. “If you didn’t want to hurt me, then you never should have taken everything away from me.”

“If you let me explain now rather than later, I can show you my actions were to protect you.”

Her reasonable tone only pissed me off. “There is nothing you can say that will ever make me forgive you for what you did.”

“Why do I feel like we’re missing a huge part of this conversation?” Ali whispered to Sixx, who was sitting on the floor at her feet. Her eyes bounced between Sammy and me with keen interest. “It’s like we started watching in the middle of a movie. I need context and all the backstory.”

“I still don’t know who that chick is,” Sixx whispered back. “Abi’s never mentioned a Sammy to me.”

“She might have dropped the name once or twice in the last few weeks. I wasn’t really paying attention. All I remember is that she’s a new friend Abi made at school.”

“Are they friends or friends?” Sixx asked, brows raising at me when I glared at him. “What? It’s a legit question, considering you’ve never had a boyfriend.”

“We’re just friends. I’m married,” Sammy announced.

My head snapped toward her in surprise. “You and Elias got married?”

She grinned. “It’s been a busy week. We had a judge come to the hospital after he had his shoulder taken care of and made it official. His mom was pissed about us not having a wedding. But I promised her we could do something special for our one-year anniversary. She’s already making plans.”

“I’m surprised he would let you out of his sight.” I remembered her mentioning he’d gotten shot back in New York, but with everything else that had happened, he hadn’t crossed my mind. “Does he even know you’re here?”

“Daddy and I don’t keep secrets. He knows where I am and why.”

I dropped the ice pack on my lap, the damn thing causing me more discomfort than alleviating it. “Then he definitely knows more than I do. Why were you at that warehouse tonight?”

“Looking for you,” she said simply, like that explained everything. It only gave me more questions.

Before I could ask any of them, Hayat walked in with a tray full of mugs. “I made tea.”
