It sounded good. I started kicking my legs under the covers in excitement.

“One condition.” He holds up a finger. “You can’t make a scene. No breaking windows and making a run for it while I try to mitigate a disaster between us and the Lucrazis. I swear to God, you better not be playing me, Ellie. I’ll fucking—”

I smile and jump on top of him. “You’ll fucking what? Huh?”

“Maybe I’ll stick it where the sun don’t shine.” He starts cackling when I smack his chest.

I stop and fall over him. His warmth makes me horny all over again. “I might like that.”

“Shut the fuck up.” He perks up.

“Let’s see how good the suite is, first.”

“Hah. You gold-digging son of a bitch.”

The next morning comes too soon, with me wrapped in Donny’s arms. I look over my shoulder, wondering why he’s not snoring like a bear, and am shocked to see his eyes already open and on me.

“Well good morning to you,” I say, rubbing my face.

“You’re peaceful when you sleep.” He strokes my hair.

“You should’ve seen me my first night here.” I laugh and slap my hand lightly to his face. “But I guess you have a charming enough way about you.”

“Nah. It’s you. You just can’t resist a devil. It’s the Rigiano in you.”

“Guilty.”

He nudges my leg twice. “C’mon. Let’s get moving.”

I’m on a high… really, truly taking in the fact that I wake up in a mansion. I walk out of my room to a full breakfast served to me in a kitchen beaming with sunlight. Sabrina is warm and grateful – as I’m learning to be. And I have it even better – the Stallion chose me.

And my mind’s occupied with Donny’s errands. I want to be sure he doesn’t miss a beat, and that he’s considering his enemies from all angles.

If Sal’s his right hand, I’m his left.

I’m lucky Sal’s not a hothead. Otherwise he’d be whispering in Donny’s ear to dump me in the river. But Sal’s been nothing short of a gentleman. I’d almost even call him a friend. Just like I’d almost call Donny a boyfriend. If not for the one big elephant in the room.

Whatever. My point is… This crew is good, so long as the hitmen are kept under close watch.

I shower and dress in plain clothes as instructed. My hair is wrangled into a bun and the look is completed with a pair of slightly oversized sunglasses so no one can recognize me.

It’s brisk outside, marking the beginning of winter. The trees are like overgrown hands with spindly fingers, greeting me with dusted white tips.

I’ve been in captivity for months now.

When Donny pulls out a brand new black AMG Mercedes from the garage, I can’t help but be impressed. He gets out of the car, wraps one of his massive arms around my back, and kisses me like I’m the only person in the world.

I’m flustered when he pulls away. I smile as he turns and opens the passenger-side door for me.

“No cab today?” I ask. “Isn’t that dangerous?”

“A boss can’t shy away from another family,” he responds. “It’s a power move. There’s fallout from a job gone wrong. But it was their guy who fucked it up. Best bet, I’m walking into that meeting tall and demanding. You’ll see. We’ll get what we want.” He smiles as I take my seat.

In the moment of lonely silence in the brand-new-smelling car, I think of the freedom I’ve earned. I get to sit beside him.

I wonder if he’s beginning to trust me like I’m beginning to trust him.
