“Stallion. Calling to swing your dick around? Lemme guess, meeting went—”

“Sal!” I scream.

“Whoa! Princess? What did you do to him? Tell me you fucked him into a coma on meeting day! You wench, you!” He laughs on the other end.

“Sal! Donny’s been hit.”

“Fuck! You’re serious?”

“Very serious! It was right after the fallout meeting in the Bronx. Donny won’t let me take him to the hospital. Tell me where to go.”

“Okay… okay. Where are you?” Sal’s tone turns serious.

“Uhh.” I look around frantically. Over my shoulder. I squint at the street signs I just passed. “Corner of Seabury Ave and… Longwood.”

“Okay. Heading which way?”

“What do you mean, which way? I don’t know!”

“Princess. Calm down. I’m a human map. We’re going to get Donny to our doc. Okay?”

I nod even though he can’t see me, and squeak something unintelligible. Looking over at Donny makes tears well up in my eyes. His hand is covered in layers of dark blood. He’s holding his arm.

“When you left the meeting point, did you drive down the block?” he asks.

“Yes.”

“Okay, then make a right onto Barreto street. It’s coming up. Okay?”

“Okay.”

I blow the light when I see no cars coming and do as I’m told. “Done.”

“Good. You’re doing great, Ellie. You’re crossing over into Hunts Point. That’s where our doctor is. Just veer right and follow the street. I have to call to alert him. Okay?”

“O—okay. Why is there a doctor around a bunch of warehouses?” I hear Sal talking on another phone, so I look over at Donny.

“You still with me?” I whisper in terror and throw my hand over his.

His breathing is shallow. He’s lost too much blood.

When he squeezes back, a sliver of hope warms my belly.

At least he’s not gurgling. That means the bullet didn’t hit a lung, I hope.

“Okay, Ellie. Doctor Vesio is alerted and will meet you outside on Lafayette. Make a left when you don’t have a choice but to turn. Should be coming up.”

My heartbeat is in my ears as I speed down the street, going around double-parked cars and cutting off a truck.

I have to save him.

I make a left where I’m supposed to and squint, looking for someone outside. “I don’t see him!” I yell into the phone.

“Keep going. Can’t miss him.”

My teeth are clattering as I keep glancing over at Donny’s chest to make sure I don’t lose him.

I sigh when I see a man in scrubs smoking a cigarette with a stretcher, and an annoyed-looking nurse beside him. “Oh, thank God.”
