Sal appears uneasy. Whether it was Paul and Marty or not – a group of unmarked cop cars heading full-speed toward the shipyard is not a good thing. I hit him, wanting to yank that stupid steering wheel around.

“We can’t leave Donny to die, Sal!”

Sal’s lips fold into a line, and he screeches the car into a one-eighty. “Not much we can do from the outside, princess.”

My heart is in my throat as I think of my brother and what he’ll do to Donny.

We pull up slowly to the shipyard. The fences are all barreled in, and there’s a group of men with guns all pointed at one man. Cop lights are flashing, the blare of sirens now silent, and boats are ripping away into the river.

It’s chaos.

And I was right, too. My brother’s signature black corvette with the single, red stripe is mixed in with the cop cars.

“Fuck. It really is him. Marty played us, Sal.” I’m holding back tears and biting my fingers. “God, is that Donny on his knees? Look, there’s a spotlight on him.”

“Fuck.” Sal slams the steering wheel. “We’re fucked, Ellie”

I squint my eyes tight. My breathing is labored. I’m terrified for him.

Donny risked everything for me. He killed his father for me… Now it’s my turn to return the favor.

After a long exhale, I open the car door. Sal tugs on my arm.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he says, ducking low.

“My brother doesn’t know I’m with him, Sal. He thinks I’m just captured by the Valentinos, and he probably came to rob you and save me. Let me play my part and try to get Donny out of this.”

He narrows his eyes at me.

“Sal.” I look him dead in the eyes. “You’re going to have to trust me on this one. I hate my brother and love Donny. That’s just the way this world goes. Now let go and let me save him.”

“If you’re playing us, Donny’s going to kill me. If you’re not playing us, Donny’s going to kill me. Either way, I’m dead.” Sal scoffs and lets go. “But this isn’t about me, is it? I trust you, Ellie. Please be careful in there. I kind of like my head attached to my body.”

I nod and feel a terrible shiver crawl down my spine. It’s freezing out here in this dress – the wind from the water isn’t helping.

I don’t know what came over me… or what the fuck I’m doing. I just know I have to make it appear that I was able to get free from whatever chaos my brother created. How did they even find us?

If Paul’s there, then he’s probably been following Donny since he abducted me.

Which would mean my brother just let me get captured?

I sneak around the torn up gate on the top of the ditch and try to pick my way down on the opposite side of the building – damn these fucking heels! There’s a lot of commotion going on, alongside groans accompanying the fleshy thuds of a hard beating. Not good.

I kick off my heels and pick up the pace before it’s too late, ignoring the rocks that bite into my skin.

Pretend to be happy when you see him. It’s the only way, I tell myself.

There’s glass and debris everywhere, but I keep running. What if they decide to execute Donny on the spot? Then I’ll truly have nothing left.

My legs and feet are already numb from the cold. I’m panting, hoping to get there on time. When I hear guns cock in my direction, I throw my hands up.

“Don’t shoot!” I pretend to hyperventilate, but I’ve seen half these guys before. They’re my brother’s crew. There’s no doubt this was a sabotage. “Marty?” I shout, and my brother turns.

Donny is nowhere to be seen anymore. Where the hell could they have taken them? Scar isn’t here either, or Vinny. Not good.

“Marty what the hell is going on?”

He smirks as he struts up to me, arms opened wide. “Sis, there you are. What do you think? Would Dad be proud of me for coming to your rescue, or what? I had to shake down this fucker a bit to find you, but he gave in to reason eventually.” He motions to Paul, and I don’t buy a word he’s saying.
