I hold the gun a few feet away from Donny’s head, my finger against the trigger guard. He stares at me with his cold grey eyes – and I see the man I fell in love with. We both know this gamble hinges on what I’m about to do. There’s not an ounce of remorse in me. Just fear of death if I screw it up.

Panicked exhales echo in my ears.

Every part of my body trembles, the weight of the gun teetering in my grasp.

I steel myself… and force the words out.

“You used me as a tool,” I say loudly. “Ever since you stole me, I’ve been nothing but a plaything. An afterthought. I’ll bet you never could have seen this day coming, because you’re so consumed in your own fucking ways.”

I take a step away from my brother and closer to Donny. My words may have started as a distraction, but somewhere within the lies I had to spew, they became real. Will you know these words are for you, Marty?

“I hate you, with every fucking inch of me. I hate you for what you did. And I don’t regret this one fucking bit.” I grit my teeth, slide my finger over the trigger, and turn the gun on my brother. He didn’t hesitate to risk my life and use me as a pawn, and he wouldn’t have hesitated to take me out knowing I’d gotten in his way.

The shock on his face, then the anger, and the awe when I pull the trigger tears through my emotions as the bullet pierces straight through his heart.

Bang! Bang!

My finger squeezes two more times until he falls backward, and then I’m tossed aside when Donny lunges free of his shackles to tackle Tony before he can get his gun out.

I’m deaf from the gunshots.

There’s a struggle, then choking. Donny’s massive body is over Tony’s. He’s banging Tony’s head against the floor over and over, until the squirming stops.

My teeth clatter for what I’ve just done. Adrenaline courses through my veins. I never imagined taking a life would leave you this numb. I look at my brother’s twitching body, and before my mind can sink into a bottomless pit threatening to swallow me whole, I scream to myself that I did the right thing. It was him or Donny… The choice was simple.

Donny pulls two pistols off of Tony faster than I can process, and rushes to untie John Scar. I force my body to move over to Vinny to do the same.

Someone is bound to check what happened here. The bangs must’ve reverberated loud enough for the workers to hear.

It’s a good thing I have three killers in my vicinity, and they owe me their lives.

Scar pats my shoulder and cocks his gun as he stands in front of me. Vinny catches a pistol from Donny and checks it before stuffing it in the back of pants. He hurls Marty’s body behind him to get him out of the doorway and pulls the gun back out. Marty’s fresh corpse thumps beside me, and I fight not to gasp.

All I can see is the nice boy before my father corrupted him. He still has the same features under that mangy beard and pained expression.

I killed him. The guilt claws a foothold in my heart.

They wait by the steel door, in the small corridor outside of the vision of the booths.

Bang! Bang!

Two more gunshots go off, my ears ring, and a hand yanks me out of the room.

“Sal, get the snipers to give us cover. We’re breaking out from the outside.” Donny drops my brother’s stolen phone and smashes it under his boot.

My surroundings sound like they’re under water, but Donny and his crew operate like nothing happened at all. A cloud of white poofs into the air, followed by a spray of blood as more men go down.

Both of my shoes are off again and I’m sprinting, sandwiched between the Valentino crew, praying we make it out alive.

Donny whips the outside door open, and a blast of frigid air hits me. My adrenaline has never pumped this hard in my life.

“Go. Go!” Vinny shouts from behind me.

Bang!

A shot that would’ve pierced my back hits Vinny instead. He goes down and I scream for Donny, but the next bullet pierces his skull. That keeps me running.

A glare from the window draws my eye – one of Marty’s men with a scoped rifle. He aims at Donny, and I scream.
