Leandro moves onto him when he confirms Johnny is clean. Once satisfied, he leans back in his seat – hidden gun still trained on them. “If what you’re saying is true, you both just led them right to me.”

“Naw. Naw. It’s not like that. We’re from out of state. Call us… affiliates from Philly. Heh. No one knows us.”

Leandro takes out his phone and dials Donny. Before he can speak, Donny does.

“I knew you had the girl with you,” Donny’s voice is unamused.

Leandro puts the phone on mute and decks the half-skunk in the temple – making me cover my face with both hands. Pompo groans, holding his head.

Leandro unmutes Donny. “The less you know, the better,” he growls. “This is a huge mistake you just made.”

“My wife cares for you, what can I say? That makes you family in my eyes.”

“Don’t get sentimental on me. You just got your men killed,” he threatens, and both men eye each other nervously. “As a fucking warning. Don’t tread on me. I don’t care if you’re the boss of all of fucking Italy. The shadows are mine.”

“It’s not the time to start a war, Hook. The intent is to keep you alive.”

“By hiring these buffoons? You’ll lead the world right to me.”

“Hook—”

“No, Donny. You listen now. This is the only warning you’re going to get. Don’t fuck with me. I’m going dark. You’ll hear from me, if I decide. Now, come pick up your boys at the strip mall parking lot. Should only be an hour from your humble abode.”

Click.

Leandro slams the phone shut and breaks it in the palm of his hand. His neck veins are jutting, yet he seems so cool while staring at the two men. He grabs the duffel bag and tosses it at them – I see a butcher’s knife glimmer for a fraction of a second as he gives it to them.

The balls on this man.

“There are plenty of cuffs in there. Take your jackets off, get a pair each, then shackle yourselves, now.”

I watch as they don’t pause for a second upon seeing the contents inside the bag. Like good little dogs, they do as they’re told.

“Good.” Leandro smirks as he reaches to test the cuffs. He then drapes their jackets over them so they don’t look too suspicious. “Now you’re going to tell the big Stallion, fuck off, just to make sure his ears are clean. Hm?” He slaps Johnny lightly on his cheek.

I’m flustered at this point. My chest is blotchy from arousal. Not only am I going to get out of this, but a capable killer just came to my rescue. I’m omitting the fact that he used me as bait, I know. A part of me whispers that at no point was I in any danger. Not with him watching over me. But my God am I turned on right now.

“Now get the fuck out of my sight.” Leandro tilts his head, allowing the two men to book out of his car like scared cats.

“Wow,” I breathe.

Leandro grunts and pulls out of the lot, cackling at the two men struggling to get back in their car.

“What if there are cameras by the stores?” I ask.

“Left one is out of order, right one blocked by the truck,” Leandro says.

I look at him dumbly. Does he always think like this?

“That’s child’s play. I’m going to scrap this car and get another across from the junkyard. I’ll paint it myself so there will be no witnesses… except you.”

“You really are paranoid. Take it from one freak to another,” I say.

“I’m prepared,” he growls. “It’s the only reason we’re still breathing.”

As we pull out of the lot, my breath catches in my chest. I spot something that can’t be real.

It can’t be.
