Before this is over, I have to have him.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

I gasp and splash as I’m awakened from a blissful sex reverie. I’m angry. An orgasm was coming. The first one in God knows how long.

“Yes?” I try not to sound flustered.

“House meeting in ten minutes,” Jane’s voice comes through the door.

“Okay.”

I wait until she walks away, then slap my hands at the water in frustration. The moment’s ruined.

Chapter 16

Alessia

The next two weeks are hard.

Cooking in the kitchen beside Jane, bonding with Gabby and Anabel, and breaking the walls down around Maria, I can only think about two things:

Why hasn’t Leandro called me back up, and how the hell am I going to get these women out into the woods at one time?

Our captor has invited literally everyone else out except for me. Sure, they weren’t all-day affairs like the one we shared, but still. I thought we had something. I guess the intrigue is only one-sided. Whatever, my time here will soon be at an end anyway… I hope.

I don’t like how quickly I’m falling into this sick competition for Leandro’s attention. A part of me wishes I could be more like Maria. When she’s called up, her eyes roll. When she comes back down, she says the birds squawking and frigid winds annoyed her. There’s something admirable about her contentment being confined.

A small, recurring detail leaves me clinging for hope. When the other girls came back, they each mentioned how Leandro hasn’t been acting the same. They hypothesize that it’s because his shrine is gone, but really? I think he wants to start over. It’s the guilt that’s eating him, keeping him in limbo.

I chuckle to myself when Anabel tells us how he handcuffed her the moment they saw one another. He really does despise her.

Jane is the most plain, honestly. Hah. Ironic. Plain Jane. But seriously, all she thinks about is going back to her job as an accountant and reuniting with her sister. We all miss our families, but bitching about it every day doesn’t make captivity lighter. Lighten up a little bit, jeez.

On the fifteenth day, we all perk up upon hearing Leandro’s heavy boots descend the stairs. We finished breakfast about an hour ago, and most of us are already done with make-up. I pray it’s my turn, and by the look on Gabby’s face, she’s thinking the same.

The locks crank. One by one.

I swallow past a lump in my throat.

Please. Please.

“Alessia,” a low growl comes from the top of the stairs, and I bounce a little too quickly to my feet.

“I was starting to think he forgot we had a fifth.” Maria raises her eyebrows, flipping the page of her latest magazine.

I twist my lips. That one hurt like a punch to the gut.

Slipping into my most comfortable flats, I ascend the stairs, glancing up at the handsome man waiting in an open dress shirt and blazer.

He never wears a suit…

With a groan, he spins and holds the door begrudgingly while I rush up the stairs.

Did I do something wrong?

“Hello,” I say once the door closes.

He says nothing.
