“Uncomfortable,” he says, sweeps me off my feet, and plants a passionate kiss on my lips. “I have a mind to rip you out of that dress and take you in the woods again.”

My chest goes weak. That’s playing dirty – making me horny right before a long, eventful night. I grab my breast to pay him back.

“Are you trying to kill me?” He walks me to a black car, having swapped out our unassuming Malibu for a Lincoln.

“Whoa, upgrade.”

“It’s what they drive, the two that we’re impersonating.”

“Nice. Can you remind me again why we’re dressed up a day early?” I ask.

“So we blend in when we scope out the reception hall tonight.”

I gasp. “We’re crashing?”

“I’m working, Sia.”

“Boo.”

The new ride is smooth, and Leandro seems to be in good spirits.

“You looking forward to starting over, babe?” I ask.

He sniffs, looking forward to the road. “I am.”

I hide my smile. That makes me eternally happy. The last time I started over, it was in witness protection, where I was literally less safe than when I was close to the mafia with Joey. Here? With Leandro? It would be heaven.

“Even though you won’t be part of the underworld?” I continue to test.

He glances at me. “I no longer belong to them. Tonight, we sever ties, amicably. Donny can go on trying to rule the world, and I’ll consider my mafia debts paid.”

“I didn’t realize you owed him anything.”

“I don’t. Not really. Something just tells me the heat keeps dying down because of his overwatch. Call it a hunch, but my Uncle Shadow should have had his way.”

A few hours of conversation pass, and now that we’re in the city, I can’t help but ogle the buildings, the water, the mayhem. It’s been so long since I’ve really taken in all the commotion. Do I miss it? Not really, but it is a nice change of pace for a night or two.

Leandro pulls up to the Plaza – flags hanging from the prestigious colonial-type building. I can’t imagine the money spent to host such an event.

“Sia, over here.” Leandro taps the center console so I look at him. “No looking up once we leave this car, hear? Our personas are a newlywed couple still in our honeymoon phase. Lushes, too. Remember?”

I shrug one shoulder suggestively and annoyingly pet his arm.

He rolls his eyes. “You’re having too much fun with this. I’m worried about you.”

We both cackle before getting out of the car.

I like Leandro’s hair like this – pulled over the front of his head, slightly messy, in a hot, purposely-done sort of way. This acting job is much better than his drawl. He pretends to be warm and hugs the valet guy like he’s known him for years. Hell, if Leandro knew someone for years, I don’t think I’d ever see him hug them. Unless it’s me from behind.

I shake my head, high on ambiance.

“Yeah, thanks man. I appreciate it.” Leandro slaps the guy’s back twice. “It’ll be an overnighter. Just tuck it anywhere. We’ll be cabbing from here.” He motions that we’ll both be drinking heavily.

“Ha, ha, alright, my man. You enjoy your stay.” The valet nods and hops in the car.

“Toodeloo, stranger,” I wave at the valet, making Leandro’s brow furrow.

He comes over to me and drapes an arm over my shoulder to keep me close. “The hell was that?”
