“Well, it seems like you got your revenge. That car was his baby, wasn’t it?”

“Yup. Though now I’m kind of having a bit of remorse over how I handled it.”

“Why?”

I shrugged and looked out the window. “He’s got a short fuse sometimes. And when he finds his pipes full of concrete and his baby needing a new paint job…”

“Yeah, about that concrete. How’d you know about that little trick?”

I glanced at him and grinned. “My dad is a builder. I spent a lot of my childhood on construction sites. I learned a few tricks.”

He let out a laugh and I laughed with him.

“There it is,” he said, his laughter dying down.

“What?”

“You’re laughing again. That’s a good sign.”

“Am I allowed to ask you questions?”

“Sure.”

“You stayed at The Rex.”

“That’s not a question.”

“No. It just seemed…not your style.”

“And you know my style?”

“I’m making a muck of this, aren’t I?”

He shot me a grin. “I know what you’re getting at. Biker at a nice hotel. Out of place. Normally you’d be right, but our club president knows the owner of The Rex Hotel empire.”

I blinked. “Seriously?”

My phone rang and I dug it out of my purse. I looked at the screen. “Oh, it’s the lying bastard motherfucker.” I fiddled with the radio knob until the music died down.

I took a deep breath and answered his call. “Hi, honey.”

“It sounds really loud. Are you in the car? You’re not with someone, are you?” he asked in way of greeting.

“I’m in a car and I’m alone.” I gritted my teeth. “How’s the trip?”

“Going well. I miss you, though.”

“I miss you too,” I lied.

“When I get home, let’s go to your favorite restaurant. We’ll sit in a cozy little booth, share a bottle of wine and the chocolate fondue…”

“Can’t wait. Listen, the traffic is bad and I don’t want to be distracted. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Love you, babe.”

“Love you, too.”

I hung up and tossed my phone into my bag. My chest was tight and my skin felt hot and prickly.
