“I want for nothing.” She leaned back in her chair. “Can’t I just come and see you? You look like hell, by the way.”

“Tavy, I love you. You know I love you. You also know I’m not a morning person and I haven’t had caffeine yet. So, either get to it, or let me go back to bed.”

“No seriously, are you sick or something? You look like you haven’t even slept.”

“Getting used to a new place. New mattress,” I lied. “And the delivery trucks are loud…”

“Ah.” Her expression softened. “Sorry. Can I do anything? Get you something? Like a white noise machine? Maybe that’ll help.”

“Maybe.” I lifted my coffee mug to my lips and took a tentative sip.

“How is it? The cinnamon?”

“Good. Not as good as vanilla, but good.”

She nodded. “Okay, so here’s the thing.”

“You slept with one of Brielle’s brothers,” I guessed.

She frowned. “What? No!”

“Really? Huh. I thought for sure something happened with you and one of them. You stayed out with Jazz that night, so I assumed something transpired.”

“You think you know me so well.”

“Don’t I?”

“Well, yeah. But no. Roman wasn’t my type. Virgil and I are buddies. And Homer’s in love with Jazz, so that definitely isn’t going to happen.”

I raised my brows.

She rolled her eyes. “Oh, please. Everyone with two eyes can see they have the hots for each other.”

“Not Brielle,” I said. “And Jazz would really like to keep it that way.”

“My lips are sealed. But I like them. Brielle, Jazz, the entire lot of them. They’re fun and playful. I think we could have a good friend group here.”

“Agreed.” I nodded and filched a piece of her cinnamon roll. “So, what’s up? Really?”

“My grandfather called me yesterday.”

“Your mom’s dad?”

“No. My dad’s dad.”

“Smoke’s father called you? Did you talk to him?”

She shook her head. “He left a message saying he wants to talk to me and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. So, I came to you. What do I do?”

“What do you want to do?” I asked carefully.

“I don’t know. My grandparents were jerks. Cutting Dad off because he got my mom pregnant. And then they didn’t want to have a relationship with me. Why now? Why’s he calling now?”

“I don’t know. You’d have to ask him that.” I paused. “Are you curious about them?”

“Yes. But talking to them feels like I’d be betraying Dad, you know?”

“People get really weird in old age. Things that they thought were important at one time just aren’t anymore. I think it starts to happen when people face mortality.”
