“Totally. Makes sense.”

“You could call him. Hear what he has to say. Maybe he’s calling to apologize. Maybe he wants to know you.”

“Maybe he’s dying,” Tavy mused. “And he wants to make shit right with Dad but he doesn’t know how to do that.”

“Would Smoke even take his father’s call?” I asked.

“I doubt it. Dad doesn’t talk about his parents often, and when he does, he seems indifferent about the whole thing.” She glanced at her phone. “Crap. I gotta go. Finish the cinnamon roll for me.”

“Okay.”

“Thanks, Logan. I just needed to talk about it with someone.”

“Any time. Keep me posted, yeah?”

“I will.” She got up and hugged me while I was still sitting. “Thanks. And you don’t look that shitty.”

I chuckled. “You with the compliments. You’ll make me blush.”

“Dinner this week?”

“Yes. Drive safe. Don’t let anyone throw another vase at you.”

“But my day would be so boring otherwise.”

She turned and headed for the door, and soon the bell of the cafe chimed and she was gone.

I took my time devouring the last of her cinnamon roll. While I ate, I pulled my phone out to text Smoke.

Me

I have a request.

A moment later, my phone buzzed with his reply.

Smoke

Sexual? I’d love to hear it.

Smiling, I typed out an answer.

Me

Not sexual. Will you shave? I have whisker burn on my cheeks and neck. Probably some other places, but I haven’t looked.

Smoke

I’ll look for you tonight. After I shave.

I set my phone aside, but it buzzed immediately with a text from an unknown number.

My heart tripped in fear, and I reached for it with cold fingers. But when I took a deep breath, I remembered that I’d changed my number and Knox didn’t know it.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

Hey, Logan. It’s Joni. Hope you don’t mind but I got your number from Mia. Are you still cool to come check out my disaster of a kitchen and help me do some planning? I’m desperate!

A smile bloomed across my face and I fired back a quick response.
