I’d gone to sleep with a hot man in my bed, I’d tried a new coffee, and I was suddenly feeling like I was exactly where I was meant to be.

“Say it,” Joni said.

“Say what?” I asked as I pulled my eyes away from the garish kitchen that needed a gut renovation.

“Say how awful this kitchen is,” Joni said. “Don’t even try to be diplomatic. It’s awful.”

I sighed. “It’s awful.”

“It needs a gut renovation, doesn’t it?”

“Yep.”

“It’s gonna cost a lot.”

“Ah, yep.”

“Yeah, I knew you were going to say that. You want something to drink?”

“Sure. Thanks.”

Joni had given me the grand tour of the house Zip had bought as a surprise for her. It was a Queen Anne style home and they’d gone from room to room renovating and preserving the charm and craftsmanship.

All that was left was the kitchen. The biggest project. The most expensive project. The most time-consuming project.

“I’ve wanted to redo the kitchen for months,” Joni said as she opened a cabinet. “But between the club taking most of Zip’s time and Everett taking the rest, it hasn’t been a priority.”

She grabbed a cup and went to the fridge. “We brought Everett home from the hospital with light sockets still unprotected.”

“The house is a work in progress,” Zip said as he came into the kitchen, carrying his infant son. “You wanted the backyard done so we could entertain, and I made that happen.”

“Yes you did, you big strong man,” Joni teased.

Zip flashed her a grin. “We used the help of several young prospects and their brawn.”

“We did.”

“Speaking of young brawn, your son has been bathed and he’s in a fresh diaper. But he’s definitely hungry and I can’t take care of that.” Zip looked at me. “Hi Logan.”

I grinned. “Hi Zip.”

“So, what’s the verdict?” Zip asked.

Joni handed me a glass of water and then took her son from his arms.

“Do you want me to lie, or do you want the truth?” I asked.

“What’s going to hurt the wallet less?”

“You promised me when you proposed that I would want for nothing—that money was no object,” Joni said.

“I remember.”

“Well, I’m just reminding you.”

Zip sighed. “Just send me the bill. I’ll sign on the dotted line.”
