“It was wild even being in a committed relationship. I use the term committed in quotation marks because, obviously that didn’t work out…” I shook my head. “Thank God we were using condoms.”

“You were together three years?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

“And you were still using condoms?” she asked.

“Yep.” I nodded. “Of all the shit Knox wanted to control, for some reason, he gave me that one. I told him when we were married, it would be different. But not until then. Looking back, I realize I never really trusted him.”

“You said he gave you that one…did he control a lot?” she asked softly.

“Yeah.” I sighed. “Young and dumb. I won’t make that mistake again.”

“Well, at least you found out he was cheating before you got married. It made it a hell of a lot easier to leave. You hungry?”

“I could eat something,” I admitted.

“How do you feel about mushroom risotto?”

I blinked. “That sounds fancy and involved.”

“Yep.” She grinned. “Cash and I had to find a way to occupy our nights. So, I’m working my way through the cookbook.”

“Tell me what to prep,” I said as I went to the kitchen sink.

“Nothing. You sit and keep me company and every now and again, feed Cash some more banana.”

“You sure?”

“Positive.”

I took a chair at the kitchen table and when Cash began banging on his tabletop, I gave him a few pieces of fruit.

“What about you?” Rach asked.

“What about me, what?”

“How are you feeling about Knox?”

I sat for a moment and pondered her words. “I don’t know. It’s weird.”

“Weird how?”

“Weird like, everything happened so fast. I found out he was cheating and then I left Las Vegas—left him—and was already on my way to Waco when he figured out I was gone. I don’t know if I’ve processed or mourned the relationship yet.”

“Did you cry? Scream?”

“I got drunk and went to jail for a few hours,” I mocked, causing us both to laugh. “But I don’t know. I had a few days in a moving truck with a man who I basically held hostage with my emotions, but I think it helped. We talked a lot.”

“Right, you and Smoke spent a few days together. Was that weird? You guys were strangers.”

“It was weird, in the beginning. But I got over my embarrassment about the entire situation pretty quickly. Smoke bailed me and Tavy out of jail. There wasn’t much I could do to be even more embarrassed after that point. I mean, he’d seen me at the lowest of the low.”

“So, you felt comfortable enough around him to talk about what happened with Knox?”

“I was comfortable enough around him to let him watch me pour Quikrete down Knox’s pipes. My brothers were proud of that one.”

“I bet they were.”
