“Aww, so cute,” Sutton drawled. “Were you bringing him pastries and coffee in bed?”

“Maybe.” I sighed.

Willa got up and grabbed a vacant chair from the table nearby. I plunked my bottom into it and clutched one of the coffees in my hands.

“How did everyone know?” I asked. “We were being so careful.”

“Careful.” Mia snorted. “Everyone knew at the freakin’ barbecue that something happened between you guys on the drive to Waco.”

I groaned. “Do you think Tavy noticed?”

Willa shook her head. “No. She definitely didn’t notice.”

“I don’t know how though,” Sutton said. “It was like, obvious obvious.”

“Why do you think Bones told everyone he was pursuing you?” Mia asked. “He was trying to get Smoke to admit he wanted you.”

“Yeah, he wanted me—in his bed,” I said.

Sutton looked between Willa and Mia and then back to me.

“What’s that look mean?” I demanded.

“Who’s gonna tell her?” Willa asked.

“I’ll do it,” Mia volunteered. “Look. It’s not as simple as saying Smoke just wanted you in his bed. These men don’t date. They either sleep with a woman and never see her again, or make them an Old Lady.”

“The concept of dating is lost on them,” Willa said.

“Wait a second.” I held up my hand. “Smoke and I just agreed to tell Tavy. And now you’re telling me it’s got to be more than that? I’m not ready for more than that.”

“You don’t know how the club operates,” Mia said slowly. “You don’t know these men. They don’t fuck around when they want a woman. And I really doubt Smoke is the kind of guy to fuck his relationship up with his estranged daughter by screwing her best friend. He could screw anyone and they wouldn’t have a connection to Tavy. But he’s risking being with you. That has to mean something.”

“I just ended an engagement,” I said.

“Yeah,” Willa said with a nod.

“With a really bad guy who fucked with my head a lot,” I added.

“I noticed you didn’t say heart,” Mia said.

I scoffed. “Not you too. It seems like everyone but me realized I was more pissed than hurt that Knox cheated on me.”

“Well, if your heart really wasn’t on the line,” Sutton said. “Then why does it matter if you’re falling for Smoke?”

“Who said I’m falling for Smoke?”

The three of them looked at each other.

“You guys have to stop doing that,” I stated.

“Sorry. It kind of happens when you become an Old Lady,” Willa explained. “We can say a lot without having to say anything.”

“Okay, here’s the thing about secrets, too,” Sutton added. “They’re not secrets if even one person knows your business. And judging by your business, the entire world knows what’s going on between you and Smoke.”

“Telling Tavy is the right call,” Mia said.

“And what am I supposed to tell her?” I asked in desperation.
