“Waverly’s homeschooled.” She smiled. “My home life is kinda out of the ordinary. I’ll tell you about it when you come over. I’ll text you the address. Three o’clock okay?”

I nodded. “Three sounds good.”

“I’ve arrived safely,” Tavy said. “And I’m currently having tea and a Danish in the study.”

“Why does it sound like you’re playing a board game? Did you kill the professor with the knife in the kitchen?” I leaned against the side of my car and hit the clicker to lock it.

She laughed. “It did sound like that, didn’t it?”

“How’s the patient?” I asked.

“Um, I actually can’t talk about it. I had to sign an NDA. Can’t even use generalities on this one.”

“Whoa, so he must be a pretty big deal, whoever he is,” I said.

“Can’t even tell you if it’s a he.”

A horse whinnied, momentarily pulling my attention. I looked into the pasture and saw two beautiful horses standing at the fence.

“Was that a horse?” Tavy asked.

“Yep.”

“Are you at the rodeo?”

“Nope. I’m at Willa and Duke’s. They live out in horse country.”

“Was that their horse neighing?”

“I don’t think so,” I said. “I think it was their neigh-bor’s.”

“You didn’t.”

“Oh, I did.”

“Dad joke alert,” she quipped.

“Of the highest order,” I agreed.

“So why are you at Willa and Duke’s?”

“I’m here to talk to Willa about my website,” I said.

“Oh, cool! I can’t wait to hear all about it when I get back.”

“Yeah, about when you get back,” I said. “Can we have dinner the night you get back in town?”

“I’d love to, but I already made plans with my dad. He called almost as soon as I got on the road. He’s not upset with me about my grandfather making contact.”

“That’s good.”

“Yeah, I think so. I don’t know if he’ll call his dad, but that’s not really up to me to decide. You know?”

“Yeah. Hard decisions all the way around.”

“But he said he wants to talk to me about something important. Ten bucks says he finally comes clean about having a girlfriend. Maybe I’ll get a new mommy.”
