I nodded and waited for him to continue.

“The man in the top hat and tuxedo is a tongue in cheek reference to the life I grew up in. Tuxes, cotilions, society shit. But then I took a path that was the complete opposite of the life I was born into—I became a biker. The old me is gone. The skeleton is a biker’s symbol for the grim reaper—and that’s who I really am.”

“I get it. Smoke and mirrors. You’re not what you seem. It’s beautiful work.”

“Thank you. You don’t have any ink.”

“That is true.”

“Any interest in getting any?”

“Not really. I don’t think I’m the tattoo type.”

“Why not?”

“Ink is permanent. And until I find out what I’m willing to have branded on my skin until the end of time even when it’s faded and disappearing into wrinkly old skin,” I grinned, “I’ll leave my canvas untouched.”

“Fair enough.”

Smoke’s hand inched up my T-shirt to rest underneath the curve of my breast. “So, what we did at the restaurant was fun…”

“Hmm. Yeah.”

His thumb grazed my nipple, making it bead. “It was adventurous,” he said.

“I guess so.”

“Care to have a few more adventures?”

“What did you have in mind?” I let out a low moan as he pinched my nipple, sending shockwaves straight to my core.

“I want to fuck your ass.”

My pleasure evaporated and was quickly replaced by anxiety. “Oh…”

His hand underneath my shirt stilled as he peered at me. “You don’t like that idea.”

“I—uh—would prefer not to explore that.”

“Okay. Can I ask why?”

“Does it matter why?” I demanded. “I don’t want to do it.”

I wrenched away from his touch and scrambled from the bed.

“Logan.” His tone was soft and he didn’t move. “We don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. I’ll never push you into trying something you don’t want.”

I went to my dresser and yanked open a drawer to pull out a pair of sweats, but I made no move to put them on. I continued to face away from him.

“Knox was really vocal about wanting to try it. He brought it up a lot.” I paused for a moment and took a deep breath. “I was going to try it on our honeymoon. Not because I wanted it, but because he was so vocal about wanting it. Actually, it’s not that I didn’t want it, that’s not really true. It’s just that he was so demanding about it, it turned me off to the idea…”

I heard Smoke’s feet hit the floor and then his hands gently settled onto my shoulders before pulling me back into his embrace. He wrapped his arms around me as he said, “Hey, it’s okay. It’s your body. I’ll never disrespect you. You want to try something, you let me know. But I won’t pressure you into trying something if you’re not comfortable with it.”

“I never thought you would.” I turned in his arms and stared up at him. “It was a knee-jerk reaction, saying no. That was about Knox, not you. But the truth is I don’t really know what I want to try because I’ve never been in a relationship where I’ve felt safe enough to explore.”

I looked up at him, imploring him to understand. “Smoke, I—I want you to take charge as our relationship progresses. I want you to lead me where I might want to go with you.”

“Only if you promise me that you’ll tell me if something makes you uncomfortable, okay?”
