“Ew. Physical? Seriously? This is insane.” She stared at her father. “How could you do this?”

“Tavy,” he began.

She shook her head. “No. I talk now.”

“But you asked me a question. I was going to answer,” he replied. His tone and expression were calm, but my heart was pounding so hard it threatened to beat out of my chest.

“She just got out of a three-year relationship!” Tavy snapped. “You took advantage of her!”

“Tavy, no,” I jumped in. “It wasn’t like that. I swear it wasn’t like that.”

“Then what was it like? And when did it happen? Have you guys been hooking up,” she made a disgusted face, “the whole time we’ve been in Waco? Or did it start sooner? Oh, God…it was on the road trip…”

I had the grace to look ashamed.

Smoke put his hand on my thigh. “You want the truth, or do you want the answer that’ll make you feel better?”

Tavy’s mouth clamped shut and her lips whitened. “This is twisted. My father and my best friend…”

“We didn’t mean for this to happen,” I said softly.

She glared. “Right, you just got naked and fell on his dick.”

“Hey.” Smoke’s voice rose. “I get that you’re upset and that this is a bit of a shock, but you don’t get to speak to her that way. She’s going to be my Old Lady one day.”

I winced and let out a low moan.

“Old Lady? Old Lady? What the ever-loving fuck?” Tavy hissed. She stood and grabbed her purse. “I’ve got to get out of here.”

“Tavy,” I pleaded.

“You were supposed to rebound, not fall for my fucking father.” Her expression was tight with pain and betrayal. “Enjoy your dinner. I’ve lost my appetite.”

Tavy stormed out of the restaurant, nearly taking a server down in her haste to get away.

I sighed. “What a mess.”

“She’ll come around.”

“Will she? She’s pretty fucking pissed off, Smoke.”

“I still think I should’ve told her alone.”

I shook my head. “At least now she can’t call me a coward.”

“You’re not a coward.”

“Aren’t I?” I played with a corner of my paper napkin. “I lied to her directly…about your toothbrush.”

“What were you supposed to say in that moment?” he asked. “The timing wasn’t right.”

“It wasn’t just about the toothbrush. She asked me to be honest with her when I was ready to start dating because she wanted to make sure the guy was good enough for me.”

“We’ll give her a few days to cool off and then we’ll see.”

“Why do you sound so blasé about all this?” I demanded.

“Are you going to leave me because she’s upset?” he demanded.
