“You think I’m kind of heartless, don’t you?” he asked.

“What makes you even ask that?” I demanded.

“Because I started dating you even though you’re my daughter’s best friend. It’s not lost on me that I’m trying to reconnect with her after years apart. But you have to understand something—Tavy will forgive me when she realizes what you mean to me, but if I let you go, you might be gone forever. I can’t risk that. I love Tavy more than anyone will ever know, but if she loves me at all, she won’t want me to miss out on the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“Yeah, that right there—you’re the exact opposite of heartless. The timing sucks though. I mean, what are the chances that we fall for each other right when you’re trying to get to know her?”

“But we did. You’re important to me, and that’s what she has to realize. She just needs time.”

He brought my fingers to his lips.

Smoke parked outside the bakery next to his motorcycle.

“Hey,” I said when he closed the car door. “I know you were supposed to stay over, but…”

“You want the place to yourself.”

I nodded. “In case she calls. In case she wants to come over and yell at me in person.”

“Let me walk you to your door, at least,” he said.

“Oh, that’s not—”

“Logan.” He cradled my face in his hands. “Let me walk you.”

“Okay,” I whispered.

He walked me into the bakery and up to my apartment. I unlocked the door and turned to him.

“Thank you,” I said, leaning in and kissing his lips.

“For what?”

“For understanding.”

“I hope she calls you. I hope this shit gets settled sooner rather than later.”

“You and me both,” I said.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he promised.

I nodded. “Tomorrow.”

“Want me to set the alarm before I leave?”

I shook my head. “I’ll do it. There’s a piece of pie waiting for me in the walk-in downstairs. I’ll set the alarm after I get it.”

He kissed me one final time.

I walked him to the door and watched as he headed down the stairs. Sighing, I put the food in the refrigerator and then went into the bedroom to change into a pair of sleep shorts and a T-shirt. I grabbed my phone and keys and headed downstairs into the bakery kitchen.

The girls had made a routine of leaving me slices of pies or cobblers in the walk-in. Smoke and I had eaten a few of them the last several days since he’d been staying at my place.

Sharing space with him was easy—and not just because I was used to living with a man. But because he was just an easy person to be around. The apartment was small, but I never felt crowded by him.

I liked him there.

I was closing the walk-in fridge when my phone buzzed on the prep table. I set the slice of chocolate cream pie down and reached for my phone.
