Tavy’s dad was young…and hot.

I couldn’t stop staring at the man. His angular jaw was covered in dark stubble, a slight smile appearing on generous lips. Ink snaked up his muscular arms and dark hair graced his head.

He wore heavy black boots, jeans, and a leather vest.

She hopped up from the bench and smiled. “Hi, Daddy. Thanks for coming.”

“Tavy.” His brown eyes twinkled. “Got yourself into some trouble, huh?”

“It wasn’t my fault,” she said automatically. “It was Logan’s.”

“Way to throw me under the bus,” I snapped, my nose wrinkling.

“Logan.” His voice was deep and raspy.

Our gazes locked and I suddenly forgot how to breathe.

“Logan, this is my dad, Smoke.”

“Smoke.” His name came out more like a croak. “Thanks for coming.”

His eyes landed on his daughter. “I was on a hot streak.” He cracked a grin. “Your call got me out of there before my luck turned. Thanks for that.”

Smoke stepped back and let the cop unlock the jail cell. Tavy bounded over to her father and gave him a big hug. He embraced her in his rugged bear arms.

“You guys hungry?” he asked as we followed him into the lobby of the police station where we picked up our personal belongings.

“I could eat,” Tavy admitted.

“Logan?” Smoke prompted when I hadn’t replied.

“Yeah,” I muttered. “I need food too. Hold on a sec.”

I turned around and approached the cop who had arrested us. “Sorry about your shoes.”

The aging cop’s lips twitched. “Happens more often than you think. Don’t sweat it.”

I caught up with Smoke and Tavy at the doors of the building. Smoke’s brow was raised in a silent question as if waiting for an explanation about why he’d had to bail us out of jail, but I didn’t say anything. He could wait to hear about our escapade from Tavy.

We stepped outside into the warm Las Vegas night. I took a deep breath, smelling clean, dry air. It smelled different than The Strip. No urine. No scent of sweat and desperation.

Smoke pulled out his cell phone from the inner breast pocket of his leather vest and began pecking away.

A car showed up a few minutes later. Smoke opened the rear passenger door and Tavy climbed into the back seat. I moved to slide in behind her. As I was about to get into the vehicle, I accidentally brushed against Smoke. A zing went through me, all the hairs on my body standing at attention.

I didn’t make eye contact with him as I settled into my seat. He closed the door and then went around to the front passenger side.

My phone chimed in my clutch. I pulled it out, grimacing when I read the text from my fiancé.

Knox

I miss you so much.

I showed Tavy my cell. She made a noise of disgust. “Piece of shit.”

“Yup.” I shoved my phone back into my clutch and stared out the window. The ride was silent until the car pulled up in front of The Rex Hotel.
