“Will do.” He put the car into gear. “We’ll stop off at the pharmacy and get your prescriptions filled. Then we’ll head to the hotel. Sound good?”

“Yeah.” I leaned my head against the seat and closed my eyes.

An hour later, Smoke and I were settled into the hotel room, propped up against pillows in our own beds. The nurse had set up an IV to keep Smoke hydrated and medicated while we rested.

The door between the two connected suites was closed and we had some measure of privacy.

“I don’t think your father likes me very much,” he announced. “Not that I blame him. You being with a biker has to be a real shock to the family.”

“Yeah, well, he’ll get over it. You saved my life. I didn’t thank you for that by the way.” I looked at him. “Thank you, Smoke.”

“You’re welcome. I’m just glad your father didn’t bring his shotgun.”

“How do you know he has a shotgun?”

“Doesn’t he?”

I grinned. “Yeah…”

“Thought so. I like that he’s protective of you.” He sighed. “I’m just going to have to win him over with my charm.”

“Are you awake?” I whispered into the dark.

Smoke grunted. “Yeah. Unfortunately.”

“I made a mistake—not taking the sedative.”

“I took some heavy-duty painkillers, but they make my heart race. But it’s either that or pain every time I breathe.”

I fell silent for a moment and then I asked, “You came back that night. Why?”

“I didn’t want you to be alone,” he said softly. “And stew.”

“I called you twice.”

“I know. I missed the first call, but I answered the second. I didn’t understand what was going on right away. There was a lot of noise, you were crying, Knox was yelling. I was only a couple of blocks from your place and I drove like a bat out of hell.”

“Oh,” I said in realization. “I was in the bathroom and he kicked the door in. My phone slipped out of my hand to the floor. I didn’t realize the line was still connected.”

“Christ, Logan. I’ve never been so fucking scared in my life.”

“You and me both.” I swallowed.

“I never should’ve left you alone. I should’ve stayed. I should’ve—”

“This isn’t your fault,” I interrupted. “Knox was unhinged. And he was clearly waiting for me to be alone and unprotected. How were you supposed to know? And even if you did, I can’t have you with me every second of every day.” I took a deep breath. “I thought it was you at the door. That’s the only reason I answered it. I think I forgot to set the alarm.”

“You told me not to blame myself. Well, then you’re not allowed to blame yourself either.”

“Okay,” I whispered. I bit my lip, not wanting to address what needed to be addressed. But I forged ahead anyway in a new act of bravery. “I didn’t know I was pregnant, Smoke. If you don’t want to be with me anymore because—”

“Stop.”

I clamped my mouth shut.

“Let me say a few things before you continue, okay?” Smoke asked.
