“Oh?”

“My brothers are flying in this afternoon.”

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

“I’m a dead man.”

I sniggered, which caused Smoke to grin. “Something tells me you can handle them.”

There was a soft knock on the door, followed by my mother entering.

“Good morning, Smoke,” she greeted.

“Good morning, Mrs. Monroe.”

I held back a smile.

“How’d you sleep?” she asked with straight face.

“Like a baby.” His eyes darted to mine as soon as he said it.

“It’s okay,” I said softly.

I would have to get used to people saying things that would hurt for a while. That was my own issue to handle, and I couldn’t expect people to edit decades of common phrases out of their vocabulary.

“How are you feeling?” Mom asked.

“Logan ordered me some breakfast and I’ll take some pain meds after that.”

“Good. Doc called,” she said. “She and Boxer would like to visit, but only if you’re up for it.”

“Doc called you?” I asked.

Mom nodded. “I’m the point of contact. If you’re too tired or not up to it, you let me know. I’ll keep the doors barred.”

Smoke grinned. “You would, wouldn’t you?”

“Yep. Oh, your president—Colt—texted. Asked if we were settled and needed anything. He’s so thoughtful.”

“Thoughtful,” Smoke repeated. “Right.”

“So I can call Doc back and tell her you’re up for the visit?”

“Fine with me. Logan?”

I nodded.

“Great.” She left the room and closed the door.

“Colt…thoughtful,” Smoke said with a wry grin. “Not the word I would’ve used to describe him. But I’m glad he’s showing the best side of himself to your mother. We’re not used to parents.”

“I’ve missed my family. It’s been too long since I’ve been to Idaho. I’d like to spend Christmas with them.”

“You want to spend Christmas with your family, then we’ll spend Christmas with your family.”

I bit my lip in worry.
