“What?”

“My mom will be offended if we don’t stay with them.”

“Well, I’m not in the business of offending people.”

“No?”

“No.” He rubbed his jaw. “They might live to regret it though.”

“Oh. Why?”

“When we have the kids. It’ll be noisy.”

“Kids? What kids?”

He looked at me, his gaze soft. “Our kids, cupcake. We’re gonna have kids. You know that, right?”

I sighed. “Smoke…”

There was a knock on the door, interrupting our talk of the future. I got up and went to answer it.

The room service attendant placed the tray on the bed next to Smoke and asked if we needed anything else before leaving.

I took the chafing dish off the plate and grabbed a fork.

“How many kids are we going to have?” I asked as I took a seat on the edge of the bed.

“Two. That sound good?”

“Two? You told Edith you wanted a big family,” I teased. “Open.” I lifted the fork and fed him a bite of food. He didn’t even protest.

“How about we start with two and take it from there?”

“That would be okay with me. Can I ask another question about our future?”

“Sure.” He opened his mouth as he waited for another bite of food.

I grinned and fed him. I was glad his appetite was present. “Do you have a timeline for these kids?”

“Whenever you’re ready for them,” he said quietly. “Take as much time as you need to heal. There’s no rush.”

“There’s a little bit of a rush,” I said.

“Why? Because of my age?”

“Kinda.”

“Cupcake,” he said softly, “that’s not a factor. And let me answer another question you haven’t asked yet—this isn’t because I missed out on Tavy’s childhood. I’ll always regret the hell out of that, but I want kids with you because I want kids with you. No other reason.”

I sighed. “You’re perfect.”

“Tell that to your father,” he joked. “Speaking of which—we should probably get married before any kids arrive on the scene. No sense in tempting fate with your father’s shotgun.”

“That wasn’t your proposal, was it?”

“Give me a little credit. Proposing while you’re spoon-feeding me eggs? No, that wasn’t it. You deserve a better proposal than that.”

“If you say so.” I leaned over and brushed my lips against his. “Smoke?”
