“When you do ask me to marry you, I just want you to know I’ll say yes.”
He grinned. “You must really want babies with me.”
I stroked a finger down his cheek. “More than you know.”
Chapter 46
Doc and Boxer arrived, and they didn’t come empty handed.
“I’m not much of a cook,” Doc said. “So I brought you both some things that will make your stay more comfortable.”
She pulled out two travel neck pillows, eye shades, and velour blankets.
“These are the best,” Doc said as she reached into the bag and took out two pairs of fuzzy socks.
“I’m not wearing those,” Smoke stated.
“Dude, you don’t know what you’re missing,” Boxer said.
“You own a pair?” Smoke asked.
“I own three.”
“If we were the same size, he’d steal mine,” Doc said with a smile.
“Thank you so much for this,” I said. “And thank you both for coming to visit. I know you’re busy with the clinic.”
“Always,” she agreed. “But you have to prioritize, and you guys are a priority.”
Tears prickled my eyes.
Boxer sat at the edge of Smoke’s bed and the two of them began to chat. Doc and I were on the other side of the room, sitting in the chairs at the table by the window. The curtains had been drawn back. It was a murky, gray day that hinted of rain.
“How are you getting around?” Doc asked, pitching her voice low.
“Are you asking as a friend or as a doctor?” I teased.
“Both.”
“I’m sore. This morning was a struggle to get out of bed—I feel old. My bones hurt. But once I’m up, I do okay. I tire easily, though.”
“You think you can make it down the hallway?” she asked.
“Probably. Why?”
Doc glanced at Smoke and Boxer who were deep in conversation and not paying any attention to us.
“I want to talk to you. Alone,” Doc said.
“Oh. Okay.” I rose slowly from my chair.
“Logan and I are going to walk the hallway,” Doc announced as she strode over to Smoke’s bed. She placed her hand on Boxer’s shoulder, her engagement ring glinting in the amber hotel light.
He grasped her hand and brought it to his lips for a kiss.
Smoke looked at me and I nodded.
