“Relax, honey. I know you have a healthy sex life.”

“Okay, you’re done. Scrub this conversation from the record.”

“It’s scrubbed,” she promised. “Keep your phone close in case I call.”

“Where is my phone?” I asked.

“It’s charging on the table.”

She hugged me goodbye and left.

I went to the table and picked up my phone. I had several missed calls and texts. I scrolled though them.

None were from Tavy.

In a fit of hurt and anger, I pressed a button. Her phone rolled right to voicemail. “You are a real shit, you know that? Not one call or text? Come on, Tavy. I know you’re pissed, but for fuck’s sake, your dad nearly died and is laid up in bed from multiple stab wounds and my ex-fiancé turned out to be a fucking psycho and now he’s dead. I thought for sure you’d at least reach out to see how we were doing. Guess I was wrong.”

I hung up. Fuming, I went back into the bedroom I shared with Smoke.

“Who were you yelling at?” he slurred.

“Shit. You heard that? I thought you were asleep.”

“Kind of hard to sleep when you’re yelling.”

“I was yelling at your daughter. She hasn’t called or texted me.”

“She’s texted me.”

I stopped mid-rage. “What? When?”

“This morning.” He reached around the bed, his hand encountering his phone. He picked it up and unlocked it. He scrolled to a message and then flipped the cell around.

I peered closer.

Tavy

I love you. I’ll visit soon.

“That’s the most lukewarm text I’ve ever seen, and I’ve dated college boys,” I said.

“And not that long ago. Thanks for the reminder,” he drawled.

“Age jokes? Really?”

“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

“Hmm. We’ll discuss that later. Visit soon? When is soon? And why is she texting you and not me?”

“She’s sorting through her feelings.”

I raised my brows. “You’re the Tavy whisperer now? Did I miss something?”

His gaze remained steady.

“Sorry, that was mean.”

“Yeah, it was. But you’re hurting, so I’ll let it slide.”
