“Thanks,” I muttered. “And you’re probably right about her. She reacts and then she feels.”

“She definitely reacted the night she found out we were dating.”

“Oh God,” I said.

“What?”

“She’s going to flip her shit when we tell her we’re going to get married.”

“Probably.”

“Oh no.”

“There’s more?” he asked.

“Technically, I’m going to be Tavy’s new stepmother…”

“Cupcake, you’re making my head pound.”

“Sorry.” I fell silent for a moment and then I moaned.

He sighed. “More?”

“You’re going to procreate twice more. At least.”

“That’s the hope.”

“No, but, she’s going to have half siblings at least twenty five years younger than her. We’re going to send her to therapy with all this.”

“I’ll foot the bill.” He closed his eyes and promptly fell asleep.

Chapter 47

My dad called and said he was taking my mother out for lunch, so Smoke and I were on our own for a little while. Smoke woke up from his nap a few minutes after I heard from Dad.

“You hungry?” I asked. “I was going to zap some of the lasagna Brooklyn brought.”

“I could eat,” he said, lifting the covers off him.

“Where are you going?”

“The bathroom.”

“Let me call for the nurse.”

When Smoke was settled back into bed, I cut a huge piece of lasagna and put it into the microwave.

“How’s your pain?” I asked.

“I’ll live.”

“Good to know.”

“So, it’s been a few hours…”

“Since I left an angry voicemail for Tavy?”

“Since my proposal.”
