“Why not?”
“If we’d called my dad to come bail us out, we would’ve gotten a lecture that had the words young lady and disappointed.”
“The reason you guys were in jail was hardly a reason. I’ve done way worse.”
Oh, right. The criminal thing.
I wondered about his past, but I knew he wouldn’t share it with me.
“You really think your dad would’ve been disappointed in you?” Smoke asked.
“I think so. Yeah.”
“Even if he knew the circumstances and why you got carted off to jail?”
“You mean the peeing in alley, getting belligerent with a cop, or puking on his shoes?”
“I was going to go with Knox cheating on you, bringing out a side of you I don’t think you normally allow to run free.”
“I never let that side rule the roost,” I said quietly. “I’ve always done the right thing at the right time. I’ve never had big emotions.”
“Why not?”
I shrugged.
“Not even when you were a teenager and hormones hijacked your brain and body?”
“They didn’t hijack my brain or body,” I said.
“No?”
“Nope. I didn’t even have a boyfriend until college.”
“No shit.”
“I’m serious.” I frowned. “You don’t believe me?”
“I believe you, but it’s just—damn. Why not?”
“Because I had four older brothers and they enjoyed scaring away the high school boys.”
“Ah. And you didn’t do anything wrong? You didn’t sneak out? Stay out past curfew?”
“It didn’t seem like that much fun—lying to my parents. Excessive drinking, puking in bushes, the shame so many of my friends had the next day after being told how they behaved in public. I didn’t even do that much in college. I focused on my studies. I graduated early.”
I felt like I was saying too much, but Smoke was easy to talk to.
“What about you?” I asked him, wanting the spotlight off of me.
“What about me?”
“What were you like when you were my age?”
“Way to make me sound old,” he said with a laugh.
“I think we’ve established that you’re young…for a dad,” I teased.
“When I was your age, Tavy’s mom and I had already split. I was in the Tarnished Angels and knee deep in some bad shit.”
