I wasn’t ready to face Smoke. My engagement had just ended, and I was already in bed with a man who knew my body better than Knox ever had.

I turned on the shower and made it scalding hot.

There was a knock on the bathroom door. “Logan?”

“I’m just gonna shower real quick,” I called out, and then stepped into the steam.

“Can I come in?” His voice was muffled, but I heard him clearly enough.

“Yeah, sure.”

The door opened and then closed. When I heard no sound of movement, I ventured out, “You still here?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“Make sure I was okay,” I said slowly as I grabbed the bar of cheap motel soap. “Why wouldn’t I be okay?”

“You tell me.”

“I’m fine, Smoke.”

“Well, it’s official. Now I know you’re not okay because you said you were fine.”

“You think I’m lying?”

“Yes.”

I glared at the shower curtain. “You’re not the first man I’ve had sex with. You get that, right?”

“But I am the first man you’ve had sex with since you found out your ex cheated on you.”

“So?”

“So, I imagine you’re feeling pretty raw. Exposed.”

“What are you, a shrink?”

“You wouldn’t be getting defensive if I was wrong.”

I gritted my teeth. “I just need a moment to myself.”

“Okay.”

When I didn’t hear the sound of the door open, I poked my head out from behind the shower curtain. “That means you can go.”

He was leaning against the sink counter. He’d put on his boxers, but he was otherwise bare.

Bare, with his beautiful tattoos and muscles on display.

My nipples immediately stood at attention.

Traitors.

“You can talk to me,” he said quietly. “About what’s going on in your head.”
