“Just ask them,” a man grumbled.

“I can’t ask them,” a woman replied. “They’re lost in each other right now.”

“Then I’ll ask them,” the man stated.

I finally ripped my gaze away from Smoke to see an elderly couple standing at the table, plates of food in their hands.

“You mind if we join you?” the man with white hair asked.

“Not at all,” Smoke replied.

“Sorry to interrupt you lovebirds.” The woman dimpled. “But all the other tables are full.”

“We have more than enough room,” I assured her.

“You both are darling,” the woman crooned. “Just darling. Aren’t they, Harry?”

Harry mumbled around the fork shoved in his mouth, his head bent over his plate.

“How long have you been married?” the woman asked as she took a napkin and placed it in her lap.

“Oh, we aren’t—”

“Two days,” Smoke interjected, shooting me a smile.

“I knew it,” the woman beamed. “I knew you were newlyweds. You have that love glow about you.”

“Edith, leave them be,” Harry said. “Let them enjoy their breakfast.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell Edith it wasn’t a love glow, but a sex glow.

“But I have to know the story of how you two met.” Edith blinked blue eyes that looked huge behind her thick, coke bottle lenses. “Harry and I were high school sweethearts.”

“I love that,” I said.

“Tell them how we met, cupcake.” Smoke picked up his fork and cut a bite of his biscuit and gravy.

Edith looked at me in expectation. Something told me it would break her heart if I told her the truth about how we met.

“We were both at a casino in Las Vegas,” I said.

“Which one?” Edith inquired.

“The Rex,” Smoke supplied.

“Oh, The Rex! That’s so fancy,” Edith said.

I nodded. “Very fancy. He was at a blackjack table when I walked up. He was losing. Losing bad. Almost all his chips were gone. But when he saw me, he said, I think my luck is about to change. He doubled down on his bets and won twice in a row. When he stood up from the table, he said, I know I’m still on a hot streak. Have a drink with me.”

I shrugged and tossed Smoke a wicked smile. “What could I do but have a drink with him?”

“That’s not even the whole story,” Smoke said.

Harry set his fork down. “Well, now I’m invested. Go on, son, tell the rest of it.”

“Yeah, love muffin. Tell the rest of it.” I placed my hand on his thigh and slid it up.

Smoke’s hand reached under the table to cover my hand with his. I thought he was going to stop my movement, but he surprised me when he glided his hand up toward his fly.
