I palmed him through his jeans, wondering if I could make him lose his train of thought.

“I was supposed to go home the next day,” Smoke said. “But I’d fallen head over heels for her. So I stayed in Vegas, trying to convince her to do the craziest thing in the world and marry me.”

I squeezed his hardening shaft that felt like he’d stuck a roll of silver dollars in his pants.

“And you married him,” Edith said with a dreamy sigh.

“I did,” I replied because Smoke was too busy clenching his jaw, trying not to let his eyes roll into the back of his head. “We eloped a few days ago. That moving truck in the parking lot? That’s all my stuff. We were on our way to Waco when the storm happened.” I shot her a wink. “Not that I’m complaining.”

“No, I wouldn’t be complaining either.” Edith giggled like we were both still in high school. She reached out and touched Harry’s cheek. “He makes me feel young still. After all these years.”

Harry harrumphed, but he also turned his head into her palm and kissed it.

“The secret to a good long marriage,” Harry announced. “You want the secret?”

“Please,” I said, my eyes trained on Harry as I rubbed Smoke harder and faster.

“Respect, communication, laughter—and tons of hanky panky.”

“Harry,” Edith admonished, her cheeks heating in embarrassment.

“Relax, honey,” Harry drawled. “We’re all adults here. Just giving these two lovebirds words of wisdom from our fifty years together.”

“Fifty years,” I repeated. “Wow!”

“Wow,” Smoke huffed.

“We should be so lucky. Right, darling?” I looked at Smoke right as I felt him tense for a moment and then suddenly relax.

He leaned back in his seat, a lazy, sated smile drifting across his face. “Right, cupcake.”

Chapter 15

“It was nice meeting you both,” Edith said as she and Harry stood up from the table. “We need to get on the road. Hopefully our daughter doesn’t have our grandbaby before we get there.”

“Safe drive to Waco,” Harry said.

Smoke made a move to stand up, but Harry shook his head. “No need to get up, son. Enjoy your honeymoon.” The elderly man winked and then he and his wife ambled away.

“I’m pretty sure Harry knew what was going on beneath the table,” Smoke drawled.

“What? No, he didn’t.”

“He told me to stay seated and then shot me a wink. That old lothario definitely knew.”

My cheeks heated. “Oh. Well, that’s…” I cleared my throat and straightened my spine. “They just told us the secret to a long and happy marriage is a ton of hanky panky. And I just hankied your panky.”

He chuckled. “You hear me complaining?”

“No.”

“Exactly. But don’t think I won’t be doing the exact same thing to you. I could barely hold a coherent conversation.”

“That was the entire point.” I grinned. “You didn’t have to tell them we were newlyweds.”

“No, I didn’t,” he agreed. “But Edith is crazy for Harry’s ornery ass. She wants the entire world to be in love. I obliged. Plus, it was easier than explaining what we’re actually doing.”

“A couple of nights of crazy, raunchy get-over-my-ex sex? Yeah, doesn’t have the same ring to it as being newlyweds.”
